Perform with Dr. Andy Galpin

This is Perform with Dr. Andy Galpin.I'm Dr. Andy Galpin, a professor and director of the Human Performance Center at Parker University. With this podcast, my goal is to help you better understand and maximize your own physical and mental performance, leveraging my two decades of experience with elite performers, including Olympians and world champions across numerous sports. The goal is to cover a range of tools, technologies, and strategies designed to help everyone—from beginners to record-breaks, and everyone in between.I’ll use a format that I call the "3 I's.” For every topic, we'll explore how to 1) Investigate (measure it), 2) Interpret (determine what’s bad, ok, good, or even elite!), and 3) Intervene (implement changes). This framework will guide our discussions on both the science and actionable insights—the do’s and don’ts.           In the upcoming episodes of Season 2, we'll dive into topics such as how metabolism and metabolic rate truly work, how to maximize brain function and health, what sports nutrition looks like in the world’s best athletes, how to improve bone health and accelerate healing, the science of strength training for kids, and much more. While not all of us are elite athletes—myself included—there are countless lessons and tools we can learn from those performing at the highest levels. And remember, as legendary coach Bill Bowerman stated, "If you have a body, you are an athlete." If you're not already, I hope you'll consider starting to train and recover like one.

    Mobility please!
I love this podcast! I’ve been following you for a while, and the way you lay out the science has changed my strength training. I was hoping you could do a mobility episode, really diving into the science and how to build our own program

Really enjoyed this episode! I’ve been a fan of Bret for years, and it’s fantastic hearing him speak of his passion for research and science behind everything he teaches us in the training group (Booty By Bret). Also, love all the attachments provided in the episode. Very helpful!!! Thank you Andy!

    Extremely Helpful
As I embark on my health and wellness journey this year, I find myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information available online. I often struggle to determine what is accurate, inaccurate, or conflicting. However, everything changed when I listened to an episode of Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose, featuring Dr. Andy Galpin as the guest speaker. I was so intrigued that I decided to subscribe to the podcast. The latest episode provided me with the best information I’ve received so far—it was insightful and easy to understand.

Dr. Galpin is clearly very passionate about high performance and sports science. In this podcast he covers very intricate, detailed concepts, but does so in a way that makes the info both easily accessible and actionable.

    Fresh and to the point
This is the best succinct pod cast on physical performance. Minute by minute these sessions give you more practical answers to how with enough foundational understanding to give you confidence to utilize what you’ve learned and Andy recommends. KenR

    Excellent
To be fair, the format of this first season feels a bit more like a course than a “classic” podcast, but I personally really like that. It gives the show a little bit of a different feel and allows Andy to really curate the content to educate the masses in a meaningful and precise way. That said, I’d definitely be down for guests or other voices on the show in the future, introducing different perspectives or experts in their respective research areas. Very cool show, though. Glad to have found it. :)

Lots of good science of Fitness
Maybe a bit science-heavy for some but I think he does a good job of laying it out—w metaphors and simplifications And for good ends: this is about a key aspect of long-term healthiness, which is sadly missing in discussions of BMI and weight loss, the obvious (and important!) aspect of health but often misleading and always incomplete

    Great Podcast
Relevant topics and information for coaches and general population.

    Interesting!
Not a trained scientist but I really love the scientific background Dr. Galpin discusses. Would be interested in more nutrition info. The variety of topics and ability to discuss scientifically and in layman’s terms is great!

    Great start
Love the content, smart, easy to understand, interesting content. Would be nice to have another voice to do some back-and-forth, it does get a little bit monotonous after a while.

    Great education on solid principles
Dr Galpin does a fantastic job of taking simple principles and explaining them to beginners in fitness all the way to experts in the field. Hoping to hear a podcast around flexibility and even mobility and what actually works.
  • GregorWa87
    Great content!
Dr. Gallon takes the highly technical and highly specific and makes it relatable and understandable to the layman, which most of us are. Excellent work.

    Needs some truth in advertising
Mostly the podcast does a decent job of hitting the hey health issues. But stop calling yourself “Dr. Gilpin”. This show is hosted by a college prof. Let’s not inflate credentials and try to suggest your listening to someone who’s actually completed med school and has earned the title of a medical doctor. There’s a vast difference between a PhD and an MD. Just be honest about that.

    Mind blown
I’m SO impressed. Halfway through the podcast on TBIs (thanks Huberman) I knew I had the source I’d been looking for since my son suffered a TBI in 2018 and the medical community said to rest till he felt better. I’ve already shared your podcast with two people, and I will be sharing it with my doctor. I’m also making additions to our dietary protocols immediately. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with me. You’ve made a difference in my life.

    Physician review
As a physician I wish 1% of my colleagues were half as intelligent, interested and informed as Andy. He’s ASTONISHING despite not being an MD, maybe, in part, because of it. Thank you Andy 🙏

    Thank you!
As a physical therapist who treats patients with TBI, I so appreciate the episode on how nutrition can help post TBI/concussion. Last summer I was sitting in a lecture by a neuropsychologist “concussion specialist”who stated that nutrition or supplementation does not help with these cases and I wanted to scream. Thank you for putting together info that I knew was out there but haven’t had time to research myself! Much appreciated! ❤️

Top-Tier Evidence-Based Podcast for Peak Performance
I listen to a lot of improvement podcasts, and Perform stands out as one of the best, if not the best, evidence-based programs I’ve heard. Thank you for making this valuable resource available.

    Disappointed
Hi, this is my first time writing a review on a podcast. I've been a big fan of the Andrew Huberman podcast and also Peter Attia. Recently, I started listening to "Perform" with Andy Galpin, and I really like his explanations. I know his podcast tends to focus more on weightlifting, powerlifting, and similar topics, not so much on endurance athletes. However, today I was listening to his episode on VO2 max and endurance build up, where he discussed marathon training. He talked about a very specific marathon training plan for someone who is preparing for their first marathon, which happens to be in Boston. First off, not many people I know have Boston as their first marathon. Normally, to qualify for Boston, you need to have completed another marathon with a qualifying time. So, it can’t really be someone’s first marathon unless they were invited through charity or some other means beyond the typical runner’s path. The idea of training for 50 days for a first marathon, especially in Boston, seemed a bit unrealistic unless you are already a marathoner or some kind of elite athlete. Many of us who run marathons as a hobby are not professional athletes, but we've been training for years and know the significance of qualifying for Boston. It’s a big achievement for everybody, so hearing that someone could prepare for it in just 50 days diminishes the value of that accomplishment for many of us. Maybe he was referring to another Boston marathon that I’m not aware of, but I would prefer to hear a podcast that is more relatable to the majority of runners out there, not just the elite, high-performance athletes. A more realistic approach for someone doing their first marathon would resonate better with me. I could be wrong, and this doesn’t mean I won’t listen to the podcast anymore because I do like some of the topics they cover. But this particular episode disappointed me in terms of the credibility I usually associate with the podcast. Just wanted to share a little input.

    Excellence at work!
Andy shares a wealth of scientifically proven, and most importantly, relevant information about how our bodies work and perform AND explains it for a broad audience so everyone can understand it. So grateful for this podcast!!!

    Outstanding!
I have listened to your guest series on Dr. Huberman’s podcast at least three times, Perform is a great extension/more focused version. As a member of the military I am curious as to what training suggestions (in all the modalities/measures of performance) you would have for service members (and probably applicable to all first responders as well) you have for us that are trying to improve ourselves and those we lead. Thank you for all you do!

    Phenomenal
I first heard Dr. Glapin on a Huberman podcast and went back and listen to those episodes a couple of times. I am not in the medical or any sport performance field but have always been captivated by the ability of the human body. Dr. Galpin does such a phenomenal job explaining and detailing his findings and protocols. His passion and love for his work comes across right from the beginning.

Andy is a great teacher - recommended to my soccer team
I’ve listened to many podcasts about the topic of lactate and zone 2 training. I think I finally understand the different energy sources associated with the different zones. And I also understand the trade off between training at higher zones than zone 2 - has to do with recovery time and “building a bigger base”. Lastly, going all way through well designed exercise programs (free) was really great information. Understanding how to improve power vs strength vs speed was extremely useful. Definitely added a few items to my routine. Fantastic podcast- Thank you!

So happy to discover this podcast

    Fantastic resource
Great show, full of detailed explanations and tons of practical actionable examples. Dr. Galpin is to performance what Dr. Attia is to longevity. As someone who values both, this is indispensable for me. I appreciate Dr Galpin’s commitment to free information, but I’d gladly pay for this resource.

    Great podcast
I really enjoy and get a lot of quality information from your podcast! I appreciate the science based information. I am 65 and work out every day both lifting and cardio. My strength level is actually greater today than when I was a college athlete and an All-American wrestler. I would like to maintain my health and ability to do the activities that I want for as long as I can. I think the information you provide will help me along that path.

    Totally Awesome Podcast
Dr. Galpin’s advice has helped me improve my training tremendously. From the first time I’ve listened as a guest on many podcasts, I was blown away by his knowledge and scientific approach to strength training and wished he had his own podcast. His podcast is a must listen for anyone serious about strength training and conditioning.

Great for all levels of fitness!
I am a woman in my 60’s who is been very active all my life but at this stage things are a little different! This is so helpful to optimize my knowledge so I can continue to do what I want to as well as perhaps improve. Dr Galpin has a great style that makes it easy to follow along during complex subject matter and has a way of making a 2 hr podcast fly by. Thanks for all the amazing info!
  • OnADiet2
    Useful and interesting information!
Ordinary 52 yr old woman here (i.e. not training for anything and not competitive), but since I was a swimmer as a kid, I have been really fascinated by exercise physiology. In addition, I hope to be healthy and functional as long as possible. So, after hearing Dr. Galpin on other podcasts, I am happy he has his own. He gives clear and memorable explanations of the physiology and, in the first episode (only one I have listed to so far) flexible protocols for interventions. For many of us who have limited time or resources, flexibility is key. Most of all I appreciate his enthusiasm, which is contagious. (Also, hummingbirds!) Excited to listen to more episodes!
