Knowing: Robin Williams

339

Chances are Robin Williams has made you laugh, cry -- or cry laughing! -- at least once in your lifetime. From sweaty standup riffs to sitcom mayhem as Mork from Ork, to a powerful Oscar-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin was an artist who was constantly pushing his craft. But behind these displays of brilliance was an isolated and often misunderstood man. From Macmillan Podcasts, Knowing: Robin Williams takes you inside the lawless and brilliant mind of one of America’s most beloved comedians. Join New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff and host Kristy Westgard as they share never-before-heard interviews and thoughtful analysis to celebrate the life and legacy of a comedic genius.

    Just what I needed
Finally catching up on HBO’s documentary about Robin, I was left wanting much more. This podcast provides that — the extra details, deeper psychological considerations, filmography, and updated, nuanced reflection on his passing.

    Great story, terrible host
I’m so distracted by trying to understand how the host can seem to be both over- and under-enunciating at the same time. She’s seriously awful.
  • Frankc29
    Episode 4 broken
There are outtakes we should be hearing that are missing; just blank audio. This needs to be fixed because it sounds like a funny bit.

    Insightful and entertaining
Wonderful podcast! Robin Williams was a game changer for the comedy world. I am a child of the eighties and grew up watching his movies and loving them. He was a phenomenal actor. After listening to the podcast, I have realized that he was a phenomenal human also. His unique voice is sorely missed especially in these somewhat strange and weird times. Thank you for creating a wonderful podcast!

    Outstanding
Very interesting and concise, full of details and audio clips. It was wonderful to have the chance to follow along the path of Robin's rise and eventual drifting down of his brilliant star. He is sorely missed and this was a great and respectful telling of his life that I would recommend to anyone who wants to learn about this legendary man.

    Narrator
Three episodes in, and I agree with other reviews, the narrator could use some work. Her diction is poor to the point of being distracting. Journalism is good. The guests are a little tangential at times. Will continue to listen because I’m interested in the life of Robin Williams.

    Could be great
The narrator has a lot of room for improvement. The journalist is quite good however.

By far the best out there
This is articulate, riveting, and one of the very best podcasts out there. Your dedication to the family is evident. Thanks so much for this! I look forward to hearing your next work.

    Enjoyed!
This podcast is a must listen if you’re interested in learning about Robin Williams personal life and career. This mini series was super fascinating and definitely worth listening to!

    Meh
Narration is very bland and it has some strange guest interviews that took up whole episodes. The story itself is interesting so I stuck it out but fast forwarded a lot.

Great portrait and biography, some wasted time on interviews
Binged this series to and from a driving vacation and my husband and I both really enjoyed the details about Robin Williams’ life and career. I was very confused why the clear linear timeline kept getting interrupted by uninteresting guest “hosts” who mostly talked about themselves and only tangentially about Robin Williams for entire episodes. These felt like a very long advertisement for a less interesting podcast. Ended up fast forwarding or skipping large chunks of two episodes (3 and 6 I think).

    Incredibly done.
Robin Williams has been my favorite comedian, actor, person for years. This podcast was so well done and a must listen if you love Robin.
  • Robinson862
    This is binge worthy
I had a light interest in Robin Williams but the story is compelling and well told. The host is great and I found myself listening to the whole thing while unpacking and cleaning post holidays. The time went by quickly and I found it to be an interesting story about a complex, deeply funny and flawed human. It was time well spent.

A glimpse into the life of a Robin Williams
I loved listening to this series! Robin Williams was a beloved and brilliant force of nature. His story is fascinating, and the producers told it with nuance and humor and sensitivity Thank you.

    I miss him!
Thank you for this podcast! I loved him, he was an inspiration to me and he helped me deal with my demons! It has been a big loss to me! May his soul live for eternity!

    Great Story-Dreadful Narration!
Dave Itzkoff is a credible and respected journalist and he paints a fascinating and full-spectrum portrait of Robin Williams in this podcast which is compelling even if you’re not a big Robin Williams fan. The fact that he was teamed with a narrator whose nasal, marble in her mouth, Valley Girl diction, deadpan delivery and who clips every “t” from every single word she mindlessly reads from a script is not only shocking and a jolt to every educated mind but diminishes the importance of the author’s work. Lost a couple of stars because of it. I will continue to plow through because of the content but it will be painful!

    Good listen
I really enjoyed this podcast-take some time to listen - poignant and thorough.

Intimate and Loving Picture of Robin❣❤️❤️
Robin was adored and loved by my family and I. This was thoughtful and full of warmth as it showed all the many sides of this wonderful individual. I learned a lot and appreciated Chris Gethard especially, emotionally telling the story about getting to work with him. That must have been such a great night! I'm not sure why so many people focus on the hostess, Kristy. I could understand her just fine and appreciated her almost reverent voice as she spoke about Robin. I learned much more about Robin and his last days, than I ever knew! Complicated, Loving, personal, emotional, brilliant, loving. These all describe the man, friend, comic, father and husband we all loved and will miss so so much. Thank you for this podcast and all the work you put in to it. Robin Williams is a legend. I miss him. (Tears)....

Great storytelling of the life of a a brilliant comedian
This podcast is beautifully produced and a pleasant, touching listen. I loved hearing more about the life of one of my favorite comedians, well told. I thought the hosts did a lovely job telling Robin’s story.
  • BrownEyedBeauty83
    I enjoyed this podcast...
Although I didn’t realize that Robin was an addict. It did put his suicide in a new light for me. I thought this podcast was well balanced and well produced.

    Can’t stand the host’s voice
A fascinating subject told in a bland and mediocre way. The host’s voice really grates on my nerves - her pronunciations are very odd and off and distracting, and it sounds like she has a bubble in her throat.
  • Musing by Me
    Oddly,
The series, points out the complexities of a certain person. All that made him who we saw, but fails to offer a connection to “The King Fisher “ and spiral that is each of us. I almost didn’t send this
  • Warrnambool
    Distracting Mispronunciations
This podcast is interesting but the habitual mispronunciations from the hostess are maddeningly distracting. Kittens become ki’ins, mittens become mi’ins, Throckmorton’s becoms Throckmor’ens... very distracting.
  • heiseymc
    Not the most engaging
Too bad a podcast about a beloved comedy legend sounds so bland. The narration from the main host sounds overly scripted. The other host at least sounds conversational and alive.
  • Strummer101er
    Loving it so far
Really enjoying it so far. Looking forward to more episodes. Hopefully this will be an ongoing series. A season on Belushi would be fantastic

    Meh
The reporting, research, narration and production are all pretty mediocre but the subject is so beloved that it’s ok.
  • Cece.Rider
    Boring
Just not very clever and or engaging.

    He made us smile,
Insight into a brilliant and troubled man that made us smile. Robin Williams you are missed my friend.
  • Can't stop listening!!
    Taught me to care
This show's guiding philosophy and tone impart empathy and understanding. Thank you to Kristy Westgard for a life changing listen.

I look forward to a new episode every week!

looks like ep 4 is fixed!
I love this show. Was concerned when I saw reviews saying ep 4 had some issues. When I listened, it seemed like it was fixed. Great work! Love these interviews.
  • AlaskagirlAMM
    Wonderful, but
The editing on episode 4 is horrible. There are long pauses where there should be audio.
  • rach100100100
    My new favorite podcast!
I grew up watching Williams, but didn’t know much about his personal life before starting this podcast. I love how it mixes investigative journalism with genuine human emotion and reactions —bravo staff!
  • Dottie71
    Fix episode 4
Love this but there’s a lot of audio missing from episode 4. Very disappointing.
  • Kid From Memphis
    Solid Content but Spotty Production
The content on this show is very facinating but it is missing significant chunks of audio (assuming they couldn’t get clearance to use certain bits of Robin Williams’ recordings)

    Let Pam speak
I think this is a great podcast and I’m enjoying it so much. Two days later I’m still thinking about a comment regarding robins treatment of Pam- showing up naked etc- that is wasn’t sexual and just him being his attention getting self. Yet in the same segment it mentions how he was starting to exercise or show his power on set. . I think Pam is the only one who can determine the tone of his action and not the male biographer. She is the only one who can say if she felt threatened or coerced or harassed or not. I wish the assessment had come from her.
  • gapatenaude
The host's tone is way off
Very informative and interesting interviews, I learned a lot about Robin Williams through the eyes of those who knew him personally. The host is not passionate enough I must say, especially for such a great subject. She tries to sound like an investigative journalist, but this podcast is an invite to know Robin more deeply, and that should be reflected in her tone. Her lack of warmth feels out of place and off genre.
  • berryhappyproductions
    Paints an intimate picture.
I love this podcast. It gives us such an intimate and respectful look into the life of a legend, and fully upholds his legacy.

    Love it but missing audio!
Loving this podcast so far but episode 4 is missing the audio of Robin’s past performances. Would love to hear them!

    “Knowing” is bittersweet
I just listened to “Knowing” for the first time. It’s a great podcast about Robin Williams. It tells stories about Robin which is the bittersweet part. I loved Robin Williams. These are wonderful snippets about Robin’s life and career — the good and the sad. Very honest and poignant. If you are a Robin fan, I highly recommended it.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Robin Williams, and this podcast is just knocking me out. It eplores Robin and his world with sympathy and tremendous insight. I knew him well, but even for me there was a lot of new info in the first two episodes, can't wait to hear the next one. For anyone who loved Robin Williams, this podcast is a must.

    Knowing Robin Wiliams
This podcast is insightful and extremely well done. It includes great rare interviews with people who knew him personally, as well as with Robin's biographer, Dave Itzkoff, who wrote the definitive book on Robin. It's fascinating to hear the audio clips of Robin performing, without the visual component, and to realize that his act still works, though in a different kind of way.

    Love spending time with Robin
I love this! Revisiting Robin's life and spending time with his story has been a fun trip down memory lane---and I'm learning some new things about him, too! He's such an incredible personality and is so sorely missed.
