The Set

775

It’s the crack era. The most violent time in New York City history. The NYPD is fighting a losing battle and instead of protecting the city from drug dealers, some police officers have become them. The Set is a 10 episode, never-before told, first-person documentary of the biggest police corruption scandal in NYPD history and the investigation that uncovered it all. From Zak Levitt, the Emmy, Peabody, and NY Press Club Investigative Journalism Award winning creator of Root of Evil, Gangster Capitalism, and Relative Unknown.

    Riveting and well-done
One of the best podcasts I’ve listened to lately. Like a good documentary, the people involved tell the story in their own words, and they are all good storytellers—the good cop, as well as those who never expected to go from naive good cop when they began to ultimately becoming corrupt cops who let everyone down, including themselves.

One of the best I’ve ever heard
This is how podcasts should be. In-depth, thorough, well narrated. Well done.

    So well done
I listen to true crime podcasts constantly. Top of the bar is In The Dark and Serial. I would say this podcast is right up there. Extremely well done. Quite shocking how blatant all this stuff was. Episode 9 when all the cops start turning on one another was jaw dropping. Don’t worry, that unfortunately doesn’t even give anything away. Really makes you wonder what type of vetting was going on to become a police officer at the time. I can only hope that things are better nowadays. I just hope that people aren’t just more sneaky. Really great listen to look at how police officers, regardless of race, can be the actual thugs out there. There are plenty of lessons to be learned from this podcast. After listening I watched a documentary and watched the testifying in front of Congress. But this podcast is what was the most eye opening of it all. So well done. I wish they made it a requirement for police officers and social workers to listen to this in their schooling.

    Solid reporting.
It’s a story as relevant 30 years ago as it is today. Well reported and edited, this is a great show!

    SO GOOD
This podcast is SO good!!! Very addictive! Really well edited and told. Loved the punchy cliff hangers at the end of every episode.

    Morganthau and his lackey
Excellent podcast . Second to the corrupt cops, and in some ways more damaging, Morganthau and his lackey Kasselman . Kasselman is the epitome of what’s wrong with bureaucracy and listening to him in this podcast is infuriating. It’s not about credit and personal vendetta’s , it’s about getting corrupt cops off the street. The fact that Kasselman is still defending their behavior is disgusting.

    Too many holes
The series is good and entertaining. For me there are just too many holes where information isn’t given. I understand time is limited but if you want to give a story then seems you’d give the whole story.

    So so good
This is one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to in years. I was hooked from the very beginning. It’s like The Wire, The Departed, Law & Order, and the Sopranos all in one. I love how Zach Levitt knows how to steer the story without getting in the way and trying to make himself the star, like so many other podcast hosts. So well done, listen to this immediately.

    “The Set” Sets the Bar
I rarely ever leave reviews, however this podcast was simply so well done that I couldn’t justify withholding brief the five-star rating that it genuinely deserves. The production, pacing, and narration set this podcast apart from 99% of the other stuff that listeners are bombarded with these days. Here’s hoping that Zak and this production team have plans for another captivating story in the near future!

    Good pod cast
NYPD corruption will never go away. NYPD officers come from the same communities, neighborhoods, gangs and culture as NYC criminals, they are the one and the same. However it always makes good journalism to continue to push the idea NYPD corruption can be eliminated.

  • So unorganized
    Great Podcast
Can get a little confusing with all the players in the story so definitely not a podcast you can mindlessly listen to while doing chores, etc.

    This is fantastic
Awesome podcast waited weekly… my only comment is Morganthough (sp?) is the biggest RAT of them all. Definitely best podcast I’ve heard in a while!

    The Set
This program had me glued to my headphones for 2 days. Well put together. Far better than scripted fiction, it’s a real slice of life. People trapped in a vortex and sucked down into the sewer. Makes you wonder how you would react in those circumstances. I’ll be looking more from these producers. They have earned a customer for life.
  • kmkmcc
    So we'll done!
This podcast is so well done. Aside from the subject material being very interesting to me, the podcast is just so well produced and a joy to listen to. Well done!! Can't wait to see what's next.

    One of the truly best
I’m a true crime podcast addict and this is second maybe only to Serial as the most fascinating, incredibly produced, dramatic and incredible stories I’ve ever heard. The production is spectacular, even down to the theme song. You guys are fantastic and absolutely have to keep making podcasts. You’re killing me with the length between when you drop new episodes! I consume them immediately! Keep up the great work!

    Keep with it
Originally listened with little interest. I guess it’s a side effect of the trillions of podcasts out there; there isn’t an expectation of greatness anymore. As the series goes along I became more and more enthralled with the story. I’m now at the point where I’m scrolling through my feed to find the latest episode. There are clips highlighting the various players—from the angle of the cops involved, the commission that is tasked with the independent investigation, and the ensuing bitterness felt by the local DA’s office. You hear the actual individuals tell their stories, all in a superbly written and recorded project. Kudos to the team that produced this series.

I have been in a podcast rut for a really long time, and this podcast is my new favorite! I am absolutely hooked and have my whole family listening. I listen to the new episodes as soon as they’re released and can’t get enough. Great production value and love all the interview clips of the real people involved. Captivating story!
