Hyperfixed

Maybe it’s just a quiet annoyance you’ve grudgingly learned to put up with, or a life defining issue that makes it hard to move forward. Whatever it is, Alex Goldman — reporter, radio producer, and overconfident idiot — will get to the bottom of it (if there’s a bottom to be found. Results may vary). Follow Alex as he figures out not only the vast hidden mechanisms that create these problems, but works with you, the listener, to find a solution. Or at least enough of an explanation that you’re ok with the annoyance. He’s not perfect. Hyperfixed is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX, a network of independent and listener-supported podcasts. Discover audio with vision at radiotopia.fm.

Promising, but the magic just isn’t there
Reply All was, and still is, my favorite podcast of all time. Super Tech Support, in particular, perfectly matched with my propensity for rabbit hole-ing down weird niche topics. Hyperfixed on paper seems like a perfect replacement, but there’s just something missing. The questions/problems Alex seeks to solve are either vapid and empty or simple to answer. Without a foil to bounce off of, Alex seems to fumble through solving the question, leaving the episodes without a coherent storyline. I love Alex Goldman as a podcaster and host, and I want this podcast to succeed, but it’s just not doing it right now.

    If you’re nosy …
I am nosy, full stop. Hyperfixed gives me information about little bits of life that would otherwise remain mostly hidden. It’s like getting a peek into relatively unexciting info that instantly becomes interesting when Alex and team set up the premise (Canadian icing label warning). The show reminds me of some of the best parts of Reply All, and it’s wonderful to have Alex telling stories again.

    Piece of My Life Back
When Alex was gone off the podcast circuit, it felt like I’d lost family member. He’s the best in the game and it feels like a friend who moved away decided to move back.

Alex is back at the board
What everyone wants. Good stories. Mix in some humor. Alex at the helm.

    Hyperfixed
Alex and the team do an excellent job weaving an engaging narrative and telling stories that are both light sweet and moving. The latest episode of uncovering Megan’s music had me in tears. The love her son has to not let this part of his mother fade away. Her song is beautiful both in her original recording and Eliza rendition of it. I love every episode but this one really moved me!

    Live show
Alex is smart and thoughtful and these shows are such a lovely way for him to give the gift of solving a problem and closing a chapter for someone. We all have these open chapters, regrets and what ifs. I think it’s soul work to help people move on and grow, to be able to put down a piece of their past and find something new to hold that space. When I am fretting about how hard it is to know what to do in these wild times, how to plug in and be helpful, shows like this help me remember it can be a small and simple kindness to someone. That’s all it takes to change the world.

    From Derrick to Reginald
hey Reginald, it’s me Derrick! Your cubicle buddy at the box factory. I’ve been listening to a general interest narrative podcast you might enjoy, hosted by Alan Goldwyn or whatever. You should check it out.

    So Fun
Love the new show and concept! It’s a fun listen, with lots of interesting tidbits, which I’m here for. Very exciting!

    Mysteries solved!
I really liked this show, but after the episode called Jack and the Missouri Color Cabal, I love this show! It’s so fun to follow them through all the steps of figuring out these problems! Super super recommend!!!

    Love
Missed this guy! Feels like he’s getting his groove and the show is getting better as it goes along. Glad to hear his voice again. I like what he is doing here. Also, the episode on Depresh Mode was really good. Proud for you bro! Keep it going! Side Note — I really miss Yes Yes No, so some version of that would be a great add. I’m at the age where internet goings-on miss me. Oh and trying to track down the original videos is painful.

    It’s okay.
It’s not a bad listen, but honestly it just makes me miss Heavyweight *so much.* This is like lifting a “light” weight off of someone - a solid story, just pretty low stakes. The diarrhea pin was a fun one, but listening to Alex teach Gwen how to be a better driver was not. I found myself wondering if Alex cringed as hard as I did when he heard his own voice refer to himself as a “problem goblin.” But it made the final edit, so maybe not… The Gwen Driving episode made me particularly nostalgic for Heavyweight so I went back and re-listened to #43 Maura, also about an adult learning to drive, but with the self deprecating humility of host Jonathan Goldstein who is admittedly not an expert in this (or truly any) arena. I’m listening to the entire show all over again now; when I’m done I’ll probably revisit Hyperfixed.

    Restraint.
Alex is a great podcaster. However without a cohost to protect him from his own inner child he often comes off as podcasting’s oldest 14 year old. Most of these topics, and by extension this podcast would best be appreciated by the K-12 demographic

    Another great podcast
This host knows how to podcast. I was so happy to see him start this one. I have loved every episode.

    Good to hear Alex again
This podcast has been very entertaining so far. If you were a fan of his previous podcast and my favorite segment of super tech-support, then you will enjoy this podcast. It takes a deep dive into situations and questions that people have a burning desire to answer. I have enjoyed it so far and I hope that we hear Alex‘s voice for many more episodes
  • Ask me about hyperfixed!
    Loved it
Thanks for the great pod! Please ensure there will be merch and that it will be a button designed by the same guy who made the diarrhea button.

    Come on, man
Alex- I’ll continue to support you, because I know you’re brilliant. But dude. These topics are so gd basic. In the past you were a bit of a cynic. I don’t know who told you that was a bad thing, but they didn’t have your best interests in mind. You’re smart and have great takes on things dude. Fart humor isn’t it. I really hope you can get back into diving into the stories and answering the questions that evoke some sense of storytelling and relevance to what’s happening in the world. I don’t want to compare you to your former cohost, but dude it telling some actual stories. You have that in you, man. Get after it.

    I love it!
I binged the four available episodes and am hooked. Some people say the stories are boring, I think it’s fascinating exploring random people’s little questions in life and learning something new in the end. I’ll be waiting for each new episode!

    My new favorite podcast
As someone with ADD who has gone down several internet rabbit holes searching for answers to a question, this podcast is very satisfying! I love the stories and the fact that I’m learning something every time.

    Finally Back!!
ReplyAll was my favorite (still is) podcast of all time & was horribly sad when it dissolved. I’m still salty about it tbh. But thankfully Alex Goldman is back with his story telling and unrelenting curiosity to get to the bottom of ANYTHING!

    Welcome Back Alex
Super excited to hear Alex back in the podverse! “Reply All” was one of my favorite podcasts and left a huge hole in my weekly listening schedule. I can’t wait to see what Alex has in store for all his true and adoring fans (ME included) Go Get ‘‘em’ Goldman!!! 🎉❤️

    Supermarket refrigeration podcast
My 24 year-old son sent me this podcast. I’ve been in the supermarket business for over 30 years and I am third generation at it. I own seven supermarkets in New York City and Long Island. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the podcast, except for the fact that I can assure you that the big chains like Safeway are very interested in saving money on Refrigeration. We , and I can speak for the whole industry ,would love to put Doors on all refrigeration, including meat and produce, but we just can’t sell as Many products with the doors on them. Unfortunately, we have to balance the desire to save money on energy and what’s better for the environment versus what can sell more product. It’s a big problem, but the average store size keeps growing and growing because people want more and more variety. There are thousands and thousands of independent grocers like me out there That would love to talk to you about it. A little bit more research and you would’ve found us. Grocers do care and we are aware of the problem.

    Excellent
As a huge “Reply All” fan, I’m excited Alex has a new show. Loved all episodes so far and can’t wait for more!

    Happy to hear Alex again
I’ve missed you Alex! So glad to have your brain back in my life!
  • What_The_WHATTT
    Yay!
I loved reply all. I didn’t realize how much I missed the sound of alex’s voice (I miss you too pj, even that laugh). It’s a comforting voice. And this type of show tickles my brain while calming it down in a way that I really miss. Mini low-stakes investigations.
  • Cheefguy
    Sheesh I tried
But these stories are sooooooo boring!
  • R-Pro Dart
    Extremely good.
Excellent show; Alex is very engaging.
  • Meaganclaire
    Underwhelmed
I just LOL’d at the review that mentioned Mystery Show bc I was just thinking how none of topics are a mystery and that led me to remembering that I miss Mystery Show. I loved Reply All and was excited to find both PJ and Alex’s new shows this week. Alas, none of the topics Alex has mulled over so far have been actually difficult to answer. I can’t believe they say in a pitch meeting and no one said, “Oh, well the answer to that is blah blah blah. Mystery solved.” Are we really so dumb as to not know that grams are a superior measurement to cups? Or you should use the same tape measure for your entire project? Or how ridiculous it is that grocery refrigeration is what it is? Or how to decide whether or not to have children??? Production is great, I theoretically enjoy listening to Alex, but I can’t listen to any on muse on how they’ve been measuring I correctly their entire lives.
  • KhwNatick
    Delightful!
So glad 99PI featured this. I’ve missed Alex since Reply All and love learning oddball stuff through his unique storytelling. So good!

    Alex, the titan!
I’ve loved Alex for forever. So glad to hear his point of view again! And doing what he does best-solving the world’s problems one gripe at a time.
  • TheBreakfastClub313
So glad that Alex is back!
I missed reply all so much! I miss some of the technical nerdiness, but, as a fellow Kristin struggling with the exact same “to have kids or not to have kids” question for all of the same reasons, I especially appreciate that you did an episode on that topic! Thanks for the quality content and insights.
  • Zerocoolguy

Missed him after the stuff at Reply All happened. Sounds like he’s still making synth music too!

    Mediocre show by mediocre person
Boring show, no magic without PJ. Also just not a good person.
  • Kevlgrant
Love Alex, love the show, not in love with “Kristin has Doubts.”
Alex: I have been an adoring fan for years—possibly have listened to everything that you’ve produced. This show has been incredible and I loved every bit up to “Kristin has Doubts.” The political ranting has lost me.

    He’s back!
I’m only one episode in and this already scratches the itch left in the void post-Reply All. It has all the same feel and authenticity. I’m so stoked to hear Alex again in his native nerdy state. Love it!
