In the Shadow of Princeton

The matriarch of a prominent Princeton family is found stabbed to death in her locked basement in 1989. Why would anyone want to kill Cissy Stuart, one of the Ivy league town’s most well-known characters? The shocking investigation sprawls across decades, as police turn their attention from a serial attacker, to her son, to a group of Princeton University students who said they were at a Grateful Dead concert at the time of the killing. The hot-blooded investigator sees a conspiracy. Is he way off base? Great but….
Loved it until the end. Great story, obviously well researched and well told but disappointing at the end. All that evidence and not once do they address any motive for their prime suspects. People kill for a reason. What was the motive to kill Sissy???

Agree with the reviewer saying what a waste of breath. What a waste of time! I heard this was good from somewhere but I’d say that only if you want to waste hours listening to the oh there’s a great new lead, which you find out after a whole episode doesn’t pan out. I kept listening because I couldn’t believe it would lead pretty much nowhere, but that’s what it did.

    Disappointing
I think if I made a podcast it would turn out just like this. No one would talk to me on tape (or even on the record), I’d learn nothing more than what was in the public records, and I would sound like I had never read a script before.

    Stop reading a script
I was interested in this story, but do not like the script reading. They are not good actors so it all sounds fake. It’s like a commercial with famous people who also can’t act and speak normally. Can’t they try to go scriptless and just give the facts amid back-and-forth banter? Even when you answer each others’ questions or reply to a statement, it’s scripted. It sounds very simple and dumb.

    Re-edit
This might have been interesting if it was limited to 3-4 episodes.

    Terrible Podcast
At the end, the only question is “why”? There’s no new information and no new discoveries. It’s all awful baseless innuendo against a family without any insight about the true perpetrator. The producers/“journalists” (along with the single minded detective who was purportedly investigating) had a conclusion without evidence when they started and, spoiler alert, came to the same conclusion at the end but, again without a scintilla of evidence! Probably the most reprehensible thing they did was to accost a man in his 50’s outside his home to suggest that he had something to do with the murder of his grandmother 35 years ago. And they’re shocked that he calmly refused to speak to them???are you kidding? They should be charged with stalking or perhaps libel/slander (both offenses since they wrote and spoke these untruths). Save yourself the time and listen to anything else - it’s got to be more worthy.

I’ll never get these hours back
Good storytelling, but jeez Louise what a waste of breath and time. Could’ve been a compelling two-parter. A whole lotta “gotchas” followed by a whole lotta “nvm.” Annoying.

Like a parody or f a true crime podcast
I wanted to like this. I listened to the whole thing. I felt it was actually a podcast about making a true crime podcast. The reporters were caricatures of true crime podcasts. Just harassing people about a tragic murder that happened a long time ago.
  • MistietheDog
    Not Much Substance
The entire podcast could be condensed into one or two episodes. Perplexing murder but not many facts to expound on.

    Speaking is not their forte
I couldn't get through the first episode. If you're not good at speaking, that's totally cool. Not everyone is. But you can't make a podcast about an interesting topic when you're not a smooth speaker and feel you need to self-indulgently act shocked any time something bad has happened. It sounds so disingenuous. Recommend having an actor read the script. Would instantly improve.

    Useless
This goes nowhere. They should have looked back at their investigation and realized they had no podcast. Skip it.

    Ouch
I got to episode 5 when I heard a blatant anti-trans political ad, and, well that’s enough for me to never listen to another minute.
  • I don need a nick name!
    I know the real killer.
I am the woman you mentioned who you said was attacked with a hammer. The police the woman taking a shower we all know who killed Emily Stewart. Leave the family alone. You two should be prosecuted. I also have a copy of the film your looking for. why won’t you post this ?

    Well researched
This is interesting and very well researched. I’m not sure why there are so many bad reviews.
  • Greta51575
    Terrible
Probably could have been one of he best true crime podcast but there was no analysis or explanation of possible motives within the family or outside of the family. It seems just overly wrought explanation of possible suspects and it seemed way more focused on the detectives and their lives. After episode 2 i was already checked out. Dont waste your time…
  • Irene8898765
    Boring
I kept waiting for something to happen but it was 8 episodes just dragging out no evidence.
  • GRE study
You never present motives for anyone
I just felt like they were hounding a family based on gossip. I rolled my eyes a few times at some of the “evidence” presented here.
  • ArcticCrimeAddict
    Nothing to see here
This podcast is quite the disappointment after listening to “Father wants us dead”. There’s nothing to it apart from warmed over rumors and innuendo. Presenting it in the voices of giddy teenagers rehearsing for a school play, does not do the show any favors either.
  • KItty_J18
It has some good points but…
So there is some good reporting in this pod. Mainly the summary of the crime. But they spend more time talking about the life and times of the main investigator and there is a lot of repetition. So it’s Ok but not the best.
  • Gsand59
    Disappointing
Having lived and worked near Princeton for many years, I had high hopes for this podcast. Unfortunately, the podcasters made it more about themselves instead of offering much new information. In the last episode, they devoted over 10 minutes to marveling about how they flew across the county and then failed to talk tomorrow one of the suspects . They clearly spent a lot of time working on this (because they told us that) but came up with very little. Not worth listening to.

    Painful to listen to
I initially liked this but it’s gone completely off the rails as the hosts explore and reexplore every detail making listening completely tedious. Also grating is the complete lack of rapport and charisma of the narrators. The sound like they are reading off a script and every time they make a “joke” or what is supposed to be a lighthearted comment it comes off as stiff and cringeworthy. Can’t bring myself to finish this one.
  • Jeanieeous
    I… just… can’t!
I cannot believe that a trusted news outlet would put out a podcast so bad… Just because someone has a mic doesn’t make them a podcaster. The two speakers trade back & forth reading lines and sound amazed at how different Manhattan is from Princeton. Not one shred of new or even old actionable insights or ideas or evidence. Speculative inference and dry reading is not reporting. Just stop!
  • pay for it- and no commercials
    Calm down complainers
People complaining about “no new evidence” calm down. What this podcast does is bring the case attention and hopefully someone does pay for the crime. It’s well done and well written.
  • dihart2
    Respect the family’s wishes
They don’t want you to make their video public and you just ignore them! You are being intrusive trying to make a podcast from their mom’s death when the family does not want it.
  • Seattle Redhead
    Nothing particularly new
I grew up in Princeton and remember this crime. Was hoping for so much more. Podcasters beware: don’t make the story about you, unless the story IS about YOU. We don’t care how you feel otherwise, and saying things like “I can’t imagine how that felt” adds nothing to the story. The female neighbor: what was her alibi? Did you try to interview the serial stabber?
  • gunner8892
    Weak sauce
A sad and fascinating case… but a mediocre podcast in which the story peters out, no new evidence is brought to light and we’re left with a last hour or 2 of a morally-dubious stakeout (that ends with “no comment”) and tearful musing about how much fun it would be to have a beer with the victim.
  • EdEdna
    Great investigation!
Loved this. It really shows you how cold cases work, how people follow them, why they don’t get solved and what stands in the way.
  • Jbolognie
    Had to stop listening
Torturing a family with no actual evidence is unethical. There is nothing here, doesn’t deserve an audience.
  • Cxx yyyy
    Not worth it
Not worth your time, especially episode seven. There’s nothing in this podcast remotely interesting or new. Read the newspaper and you’ll get the gist.
  • Phun Thymes
    Super Slow
Started out good but lost direction and spoiler alert……. Super disappointed in the end. Just wasted and entire day.
  • MPM1!
    Thought there was something…
“…but it turned out to be nothing…” pretty much sums up the show. Should’ve been titled red herring. And not at all victim-centered.
  • thybgbb
    Disappointed
I think this could have been a good podcast if the narrators didn’t sound like they were reading from a script. Their communication with each other doesn’t sound natural, sounds as if they recorded at two separate times just reading lines.
  • HRYager
    Amateurs
This case is cold for a reason. This is such a waste of time. It’s episode after episode building up to possible leads they aren’t even interesting dead ends. Just elementary speculation
  • ciaralin
    Lost its focus
This case seems to be more about the obsessed cop than the crime or the victim. I think some should look at Tony’s old cases more closely, or rather the convictions that came from Tony’s cases.
  • NassauBeat
    Good podcast, appropriately paced
Don’t understand people complaining about the pacing of the show. The show takes time to unpack evidence, dig into the background of suspects and investigators, and tell the story of how discoveries happened. It helps the listener feel more connected. I’m invested, can’t wait to hear where they end up.
  • Namynot
    Unlock already
When do the rest of the episodes unlock? Waiting
  • tmon92
    Wildly speculative
This story does not fill an entire podcast. There is zero evidence against any of the people discussed in the show, so the hosts end up pedaling the police’s irresponsible speculation and harassment. Hosts do a good job at pointing out the police’s tunnel vision but then again, continue to release episodes?
  • Touchgrassmfers
    Boring
Love podcasts but not this one.
  • Jweezyyyy
Can’t believe they put this out
Listened to all 6 episodes airing for something to happen. Spoiler alert. It doesn’t. Wish I could get my time back.
  • litawillis
    Drags on, anticlimactic
Get to the point. Just the same thing over and over.
  • lcapdon
    Intriguing
Granted I’m from NJ so this is particularly interesting to me, but the story itself is captivating. Each episode I’m more pulled in to the story. Well done and narrated. A+ four true crime podcast.
  • jdkgdbksbfmldndbrkr
I wanted to give it 2 stars
But couldn’t. Honestly, it just feels like the family is being hounded to no end, without any solid evidence. What about the “friend” who had lunch with Sissy the day she was killed?
  • Bellamammal
This isn’t how people consume media anymore
The gaps in release times makes this impossible to follow. People binge media now. I listen to dozens of other podcasts between releases which makes this story impossible to follow coherently.
  • ursula.s
    Great work by actual journalists
The journalistic investigation into an old murder case in Princeton digs through old information with a personal touch. I found myself really wanting the victim to finally get justice through the sincere efforts of these two. Good narration as well.
  • Chefchik8
    I quit
I’m partway into Ep. 3 or is it 2? I don’t know and don’t care because I’m BORED!!! The dragging out, speculation, hosts with flat personalities, and dull characters.
  • Bgisurja
    BORRRRING
I got through 4 episodes. I wanted to like it, I tried to like it. But it was just too boring to continue being curious.
  • Tom300ooo
    Not worth it
I’m giving up mid listen. I listen to a lot of podcasts and this is not it. The host’s drag everything out and there is a lot of speculation. The tone is off. It’s very juvenile sounding.
  • $smalls$
    Seriously?!?
Keeping all of the episodes, except the first one, behind a paywall is horrible!
