Murder Homes

The real estate market has never been hotter. Houses sell as soon as they’re listed. Bidding wars lead to all cash deals far above the asking price. But there is one kind of property that often sits on the market for years, no matter how much of a bargain it seems to be. Potential buyers come and go, the price keeps going down, and still the house stands empty.

In real estate jargon, it’s called a “stigmatized property” because the home comes with a history. An unfortunate one – a horrible death occurred here. But what few people know is exactly what happened.... or why.

Each week, Murder Homes tells the story of a single property. Who lived there? What secrets did they keep, and what did they leave behind? Part history, part murder mystery, this podcast mixes expert interviews, witness accounts, and court records to pull back the curtain on the hidden stories each property has to tell.

Would you be able to live somewhere that seems perfect, if it weren’t for the ghosts of its past?

    Gave it another shot!
I gave it another shot and I don’t know what was wrong with me before, but this is a really good podcast and I’m binging it. My favorite episode is murder home of the future.

    Brilliant
Murder home of the future was perfect. The whole show is excellent but this episode should be the beginning of its own show. Episodes written and read would be also very well loved. The only complain about this show is there isn’t enough of them. Excellent show.

    Fascinating and Flawlessly Executed
Your show is so wonderful. It is not gratuitous or grotesque. It reminds me of the ghost stories we used to share at camp and melds that with my love of real estate. It Combines shows like “A Haunting,” radio’s “Mystery Theatre, “ and “House Hunters!” What more could anyone ask for? I was thinking that you should do a show about a house near my hometown that was owned by our US Senator Charles Percy. His daughter was murdered there and still remains unsolved. It is a haunting story. They lived on Sheridan Road in Kenilworth, IL. Also, the murder of a young couple, Richard and Nancy Langert, in their Winnetka, IL townhouse. I believe she was pregnant at the time. I can’t wait for season 4!
  • um, hey, get off my foot
    Great show but
It only gets 2 stars for the amount of ads! Ridiculous amount of ads… I dozed off and when I awoke soon after I forgot what show I was listening to.

    Meh…
For me, the thing that really differentiates an “okay” podcast from a GREAT podcast is the host’s ability to engage the audience and make it feel almost like an intimate conversation. That being said, this host feels like he’s reading a script, one that he has no time to practice. I’m not claiming I could do any better, just explaining my rating, as I just could not engage with this show. Not to say it’s bad, just…well, boring.
  • DeacRipps
    Went political
Season 1 is good half of season 2 is good and then the show started focusing on killings that happened but less focus on the home and more focus on political issues with a liberal bias.

This podcast has lost its way
The first season was interesting but now it’s just turned into another true crime show. It really has little to do with the actual homes which is the whole premise of the show. There are much better true crime podcasts out there if that’s what you’re looking for.

    Love this show
Stumbled upon this after loving shows like Going West and The Prosecutors. I thought it might be a gory show based on the title but it’s not at all. It’s not really news… it’s more storytelling with a unique and polished artistic flair. Very good use of music, etc. Listen to the one about the house of the future. I heard it start and was like, “No, I don’t do fiction”… but by the time I got to phone I was already like, “Okay, okay.” Very cool, very different. Love it!

Not the kind of show I was hoping it was.
I was really hoping, after the initial first season episode with the realtor, that this was a podcast about people buying and selling homes that were murder houses. I was excited to hear their stories about how they found out, anything they experienced, all the things. But it feels like a re-telling of crime stories we already know about, with an albeit brief history of the house thrown in. Then there’s a paranormal couple brought into a few episodes that are good for another type of podcast, but they (the couple) have nothing to do with the house. I will continue to listen, but hope that future episodes can be considered about actual stories of people that live in, or or have dealt with murder houses, not just re telling of crime stories many are already familiar with.

Unsubscribed due to the latest episode
It’s not 2015 anymore. We are no longer doing the both sides are equal and deserve the same consideration thing. Giving these people a platform is dangerous and irresponsible and not what I signed up for. So I’m done with listening.

    Perhaps…
The “good” priest was the victim of a rendezvous gone bad. And, if this were the case, perhaps the assailant lived on Shelter Island. Perhaps this alleged man of the cloth enjoyed a life of subterfuge and risk unbeknownst to his adoring acolytes. Double lives exist everywhere. Even on islands.

Wait, wait..what the? You gave these misogynists-crybaby-men & one (of course) turncoat woman, F’n FREE airtime, to spew their (yawn) rage against females? The lead story was depressing enough! …These trolls had a field day, on MY dime, applying dated tropes, fake statistics, circa 1970’s news..Yet, You with the mic? with a paying customer base? with TWO daughters? didn’t think to interrupt these trolls for, uh, a fact-check?! I’m out.

    Very interesting and unique!
I’m so glad I found your podcast. You’ve done a great job with the stories. It’s my favorite for sure; I look forward to each episode.

Good show with lots of long commercials
Good show that’s getting better! But there are so many and long commercials! I would also prefer less mhms and stuff from the host on phone calls and other interviews.
  • Jersey Girl in Vermont
    Love!
This podcast is so interesting and well done. Just discovered and can’t wait to hear all the episodes. Update.. this podcast is downright spooky ! So well done. Host is fabulous..

    Amazing!
I love the stories. I also enjoy the personal story of your home. BTW I could listen to you read a phone book. 🙂
  • alaskanalligator
Not sure what this is about
These stories are loosely connected to houses. I think the author really missed the ball with these stories and could have made them more about the house and real estate market for murder homes. This show really has the potential to see a different perspective but ends up sounding like every other true crime podcast.

    Disappointed
I don’t think the host has a good way of storytelling. I had to dump this Podcast after he was interviewing one of the leaders of the satanic temple and he said they were on the right side of many social issues. Nope!
  • Pandafet
    Way TOO MANY Ads
Can’t listen to this. Why are some podcasts so greedy. Get a real job
  • DanDolo510
    Unlistenable because of commercials
Mid podcast commercials are not allowed!!! This is a shame! Also why is this broken up into many episodes? Podcasts are long format!! 😡

    Started out strong but….
Season 1 was phenomenal. I really enjoyed everything about it. As an avid true crime podcast listener it is hard to find anything in the genre that is unique anymore that is still respectful and easy to listen to. I loved the unique twist of this format and binged through the first season. Season 2 just strays too far from the basis of the premise of the show and has now sounds like every other true crime podcast. The latest episode with Sareb Kaufman is a snooze fest I can’t even finish. It’s painful to listen to that guy go on & on & on. I can’t find anything redeeming there. I really like listening to the host so I hope he flips back to the original idea and I will gladly revise my review if he does. He is good at what he does but please go back to what worked and made you unique!

    LOVE THIS SHOW
OMG I LOVE THIS SHOW !!!!
  • duolingo in spanish
    Potentially awesome!
This show has good bones but needs some fine tuning. Some of the stories featured seem to stray away from the main topic in a genre that isn’t lacking for subject matter. Example, the latest goat episode. While quirky or strange, doesn’t really make sense with show. The first season was great and I think the creator has something really interesting to capture crime enthusiast from a different perspective. Lean back into the original format of the effect the murder had on the real estate and the community. Fantastic concept!
  • Chippewa1976
    Love the show
Love the show. Joined Binge to hear more but there hasn’t been a new episode since January?? Is it over? I don’t want to pay if I’m not getting new content. Rampley Trail episode was AWFUL!!! The lady and her laugh. She thought she was hilarious.

    LOVE
Great perspective, appreciate the intriguing listen
  • Banh91
    Wayyyy too many ads
The show is really great. I love the content and the narration, but the episodes are pretty short and at least 50% ads. I want to keep listening, but it’s really annoying to have to keep pausing what I’m doing to skip ads every 5 mins.
  • DixieDoodle!
    Interesting
This is an interesting podcast although it is very short. There are way to many ads, especially considering the condensed content.
  • spotg34
    One of the best
    Top-5 favorite podcasts!

    Great show!
That RE agent is terrible and truly painful to listen to. She blows own horn about sales prowess and strategy far too much Excellent show though Easy binge Unique idea

    Love this show!!!
Awesome show, could listen to all of them in one day, trying to pace myself so I have episodes to listen to at work!!
  • tutuof5
Love it!! Binge worthy for sure!
    👏
  • Schhhiejsn
    Great show!
This show really has me torn, because I appreciate so much how he doesn’t add any fluff, or cartoon like crap like a lot of other true crime shows But I also want them to be longer, and I mean that has a great compliment.
  • Tamjyo
    Matt
I’d love to hear more podcasts hosted by Matt. Murder Homes is fantastic and very well done. It’s listened to best by subscribing unless you’re one of those people who love the interrupted 2 minute commercials every 5 minutes.
  • Bentley. 77
    Finally a good one!!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your podcast!! You are straight, to the point, and don’t waste the first 20 minutes with nonsense small talk about yourself. You’re a great storyteller with interesting content. Love it!!!
  • juleswcu
    Too many ads
As others said, there is more ad time than content. I understand they need to have some ads but 2/3 is ads in a 30 minute episode is ridiculous. Plus, they are ads that scream at you. Love the concept, hate the presentation.
  • Carioca57
    Frustrating
The stories are interesting if only there weren’t so many commercials! I’m a subscriber and I don’t understand why there are stills ads! I feel like I’m wasting money and I’ve had to stop listening.
  • Barbie112112
    Too many ads
    Unfortunately lots of ads
  • Peyton Cusick
    Great Premise
Way too many commercial interruptions! The most I’ve ever experienced during a podcast or even a tv show. Interesting content, professionally written, good narration. They dive into some more obscure murder cases which is refreshing.
  • Tankgirl10
    Great idea, too many ads
This idea and show are close to good. The episodes need to be longer and more fleshed out or remove half the ads. The ads are equivalent to those of an hour long show. Wondery should know better.
  • vstimac
Good premise but too many ad breaks
It’s hard to get into the story when there are 3-4 ad breaks in a 20-25 minute show.
  • bwrekaBB
    Love it… but!
Love this podcast! It’s unique! But I’m an iheart true crime+ subscriber and the extra perks and episodes are not there!
  • Caity Featherston
    Absolutely love!!!
So interesting and well thought out. I love the perspective of the home.
  • LikeAChemical
    Very well researched and thoughtful
As someone who spent hours making sure my own house hadn’t faced any stigmatizing events, including going back to land maps from the 1800’s, I was super excited to see this podcast. I generally avoid podcasts that tell a story in just one episode because I often find them flippant and lacking detail, but this is not the case here. Matt has clearly spent a lot of time researching and respectfully tells the stories of the victims, as well as the fate of the property. Looking forward to the next episode!
  • Bigtone28
    Too Good
Great show that pulls you in and makes you want to check out the next episode
  • Nutly19
    Enjoying So Far!
I’m thinking people comparing this with Dark House never really listened to this podcast. Dark House focuses a lot on hauntings, which is great, as well as architecture. This is very different. Definitely room for this podcast. I like the narrators voice. Doesn’t glorify murder, but empathizes with the victims…and sometimes the buyers! Loved the interviews, especially with the realtor! You know she’s seen a lot. I hope this show continues despite criticisms. I’m excited to give it a try.
