Mind of a Monster: The Butcher Baker

728
True Crime #197

Hosted by criminal psychologist Michelle Ward, Mind of a Monster brings you exclusive access and insight into depraved killers. Hear from history’s most notorious serial killers—with chilling audio straight from the monsters themselves.

Season 6 examines the case of the Butcher Baker, Robert Hansen. 1980s Alaska: a swirling, chaotic mix of oil workers, dancers, sex workers and old-school cops. On the seedy 4th Avenue strip in Anchorage, nicknamed the world's longest bar, women start to go missing, plucked from the street or the bars and never seen again.

In this 7-part series, Dr. Michelle Ward investigates the case of one of the US's most prolific, but not widely known, serial killers. She'll talk to survivors, criminology experts and the police on the ground, uncovering audio tapes, police reports and old newspaper articles, all to reveal the killer's identity as it happened.

Love this podcast. Lots of details I didn’t know on cases I’ve heard multiple times. Enjoyed hearing real clips and the interviews with those involved were fascinating. Host is wonderful. Easy to listen to very insightful.

    Insightful
Great podcast. The story may have been told before but the attention to detail and the actual families was truly amazing. Hearing from the victims was unreal. I appreciate that work that those who believed put in to ensure his capture.

    Best podcast!!!☆☆
Okay I don't know why some people give a 1 star review or below a 5 star. You guys need to know that this is a great podcast. I never really listen to podcasts and I'm picky. When I found this one, I couldn't stop listening about it and its really legit how they get tapes and people to speak that were part of the crime. This podcast deserves 5 stars. Also you guys who keep complaining about the commercials: theres a commercial with Ryan Reynolds... SO NO COMPLAINING CUZ IT'S RYAN REYNOLDS!!!!

    Love everything but the music
I’m really enjoying this podcast so far (and I’m very picky). I’m only on season 1 so maybe this changes but I really can’t stand the background music and random sound effects that come in at random times. It’s very distracting and takes away from the content.

    Great…BUT
This could be a great show but there are way too many commercials. Just a few minutes of the actual show and then 3-4 commercials. The same commercials over and over. Most pod casts don’t take so many commercial breaks. Just tedious to try to listen to

    Ridiculous amount of ads
This podcast is very well done, but the amount of ads are insane. I’ve never heard so many in a podcast, including the “free” versions of the ones I listen to. I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish the series.

    WELL DONE
Dr Michelle Ward need to direct the documentary with Netflix. The way she want the story to be hear it’s Amazing, she cares so much about her work and mostly the victims. She deserve a Grammy or something special. She need to do a special on Netflix about all this episodes (1-6) before all major people die or no able to share their stories.

One of my favorite true crime shows. Really delves into how and why the criminals turned out the way they did. Very interesting to listen to. Would be super interested to hear dr Michelle ward go into the Jasmine Richardson and Jeremy Steinke case!

    Smart and authentic
The interviews with the investigators, analysts, and prosecutors are unlike anything I’ve heard before. Dr Ward breaks down the complex topics into digestible blocks- it’s not too clinical. Her bedside manner is very subtle and she comes across very authentic. She doesn’t simply focus the macabre aspects to make the story interesting. This is a new perspective on familiar creeps.

    Well done!
Currently binging on this one, and loving it. The original interviews are fascinating, and although some of them are well-known, several others are new material — at least to me. Michelle’s interviews provide some great insight from people who were there and lived through these horrible times. A real in-depth dive into… well, the mind of these monsters.

    Highly recommend!!
I knew about all of these stories BUT they are being told to you in such a more personal way, I have learned so much more about these people that talked about. This is a very very good podcast!!

    Thorough, balanced
Appreciated the thorough investigation and thoughtful editing. Also that the focus was more than the murders/monster but the resilience of survivors. Your attention to law enforcement’s biases was valuable, as this blinds us in many fields but perhaps few as critical as this one. Maxine and Glenn and Greg were standouts and deserve kudos. Well done piece.

Mind of a Monster: The Butcher Baker
Absolutely riveting! Can’t believe how the Alaska police let this go on for 10 whole years. Loved the archival interviews: throughly researched and well put together!

    What a story
This was my first time hearing this story. What a tragedy 😢 hearing these women’s stories… I was stopped in my tracks when you shared that all the women heard the others in their heads when they ran from him. Holy moly 😭 well done with the story 🙏🏽

    Bad experience with those detectives
I was a 21 year old female murder suspect in Anchorage right at that time (I’m innocent). I was on summer break from an Outside college. I have never in my life been treated with such a lack of professionalism and basic respect from those detectives, including one of the female ones.

    Masterfully told!

    Michelle Ward
I never leave reviews and I don’t listen to podcast. EXCEPT Michelle Ward’s mind of a monster. This podcast is phenomenal! Her goal to focus is to tell the stories of the victims and their story. She accomplishes that and reaches 120%. She is thorough and keeps you captivated. Her interviews consist of people and witnesses that haven’t been interviewed ever and who play a vital role in each of her serial killer stories. I look forward to getting into my vehicle to listen to the latest update to her Show mind of a monster. I cannot tell you how thorough and awesome her show is. She is not biased, and she gives a all-around picture of every part and everyone involved in these podcast.

    Honoring the victims
The way this story unfolds pays tribute to Hansen’s victims; they are the heroes of this story. I send love and peace to the woman who used the Cindy Paulson name to bring this depraved individual to justice. Her attention to detail, photographic memory, and overall resilience are so inspiring. Cindy possesses all the kindness and empathy Robert Hanson never could.

    Clear & Concise
I’ve listened to all the seasons. I love that is organized, respectful, & easy to listen. I enjoy Dr. Ward’s voice and the way she speaks. There are podcasts I cannot listen to because the narration and all the extra theatrics. This is just good ole fashion easy to follow story telling about real people and real things. Way to go!!!

Season Six - my favorite true crime podcast to date
I see some comments about not liking a woman commentator for true crime. But let’s remember the reason that Hansen remained out there longer than he should have was because it was men that were “in charge”. If they had listened to Maxine Farrell at the beginning, Cindy and a lot of other women may have been spared from this monster. Another comment about stories of Hansen’s past not being covered thoroughly, obviously comes from a person who has not read the book, “Butcher Baker” by Walter Gilmour and Leland Hale. They would see what lengths Hale took to bring us the background story. The show may not have focused on Hansen’s early years as much as the book does, but they gave us enough to understand what a sick person he was. I think the producers and commentators can be proud for what they have brought to us. The addition of Cindy’s story for an unexpected seventh show was the icing on the cake in my opinion.

    Whatta podcast!!
Such a multidimensional and well-rounded podcast. Loved the diverse representation and inclusion of so many voices so often not heard. Totally hooked and in awe of the production after hearing season 6. Thank you.
  • oaky609
    Underwhelming
It’s fine as a true crime podcast. I wasn’t enthralled as I’ve been with previous podcasts I’ve listened to and the narrator is forgettable as the host. Not terrible but nothing to write home about. Stick to dateline.
  • BettieE24
    Robert Hanson season.
I’m giving this five stars simply because past his childhood it’s good. I happened to know people that knew Robert Hansen as a child. I think a lot more research into his history and initial town he was born in and started out life needed to be done. I run a business in Estherville. From what people that I know that knew him he wasn’t the nice quiet kid. He was known to be really not nice to deal with. Please do more research rather than just using things people wrote. There are still plenty of people between Estherville and Pocahontas that can give a much better perspective of how he was growing up.

This is a very well done podcast. Keep up the great work!

    Well done
I’ve only listened to the latest season, but I think it’s great. And contrary to what other reviews read, I think the narrator is very respectful regarding the victims and their lives, and it wasn’t made into a fashion show. Seems that some just have an issue with female podcasters.

    Not a fan..
I’m a true crime junkie but Michelle Ward is, at best, an amateur storyteller. I
