The New Thinkery

Philosophy #153

The New Thinkery is a podcast devoted to political philosophy and its history, along with its many guises in literature, film, and human experience generally. Named after Socrates’ infamous “Thinkery” in Aristophanes’ Clouds, The New Thinkery strikes a balance between the seriousness of academia and the playfulness of casual conversation among friends.

    Number one podcast
Unlike other podcasts, this one FULLY examines life, not partially. I can’t wait to be like Greg when I grow up!

Who has courage in the 21st century?
A “good” podcast. Their minds make me want to go to St. John’s College.

    A masterclass
My favorite podcast, and by far the best political philosophy commentary available on the internet today. Cannot recommend highly enough.

    Insightful observations and lively conversations
What a great podcast - such insightful observations into both philosophy and the issues of our time. I enjoy the lively banter of the hosts and the added insights of the show’s occasional guests.

A Philosophy Podcast That Won’t Bore You to Death…
…only to tears. 5/5 stars. Best enjoyed alongside an alcoholic drink or, better yet, some of Willie Nelson’s finest weed. Or cheese from Grampa’s Cheese Barn. Or all of the above. Is Pious pious ‘cause God loves pious? Socrates asks whose bias y’all seek. All for Plato, screech! I’m out here ballin’, I know y’all hear my sneaks.

Best Political Philosophy Podcast by far
    Be nice to Greg!

    Send pics?
Awesome show! Very knowledgable about political philosophy, entertaining, too. They keep asking their listeners to send pics, but I don’t have a girlfriend, let alone a wife. But if I did, I’d send many pics ASAP. You should, too!

    The best!
Perhaps the best podcast on philosophy out there. Thoughtful, with lots of humor along the way.

    Complaint
This show is too good for the audience. The hosts are too smart and well-dressed. They make me feel inadequate. Please stop it. Tks.

    A conversation among friends
This is not a lecture podcast or a gnostic Straussian conference in the middle of night. Rather, it is a cordial conversation between friends about some worthwhile readings. If you need to feed the springs of your own reading, then give it a listen.

    Good podcast
Really good, in-depth discussions of great books. The way you know these guys are real nerds is that every time one of them makes a very mildly funny joke the whole conversation is derailed for a minute by gales of laughter and botched comebacks. 5/5

    Great podcast for advertiser!
Great hosts! Always funny and sometimes profound conversations. I highly recommend this podcast to all advertisers. I would definitely buy the products recommended by Alex, Greg and Tempest1610!

    Not serious
Not a serious discussion of philosophy. I recommend BBC’s In Our Time as an alternative.

    One of the best
In the growing part of the world-wide-intrawebs of philosophy podcasts this is one of the best, if not the bestest. I encourage you to listen.

    Personable, philological and philosophical
Great episodes. Covers strictly philosophical texts and ideas as well as (my wheelhouse) literary texts. And the hosts balance well between rigor and (also my wheelhouse!) accessibility to the novice.

    Best in the biz
These fellas know what they're doing! The interviews are engaging, informative, and important. They help preserve the biographies and knowledge of some of the greatest teachers in political philosophy. For my part? I actually prefer when there’s no guest. The shows are funnier, and usually include deeper textual analysis in the “normal” episodes. You must listen to this show. Your soul will punish you eternally if you do not! You have been warned!!

    A Poem.
In the world of the New Thinkery, ketchup, is a vegetable. Embezzlement? Morally acceptable. And Socrates? A criminal... There ya go.

    Food for thought?
The New Thinkery is the latest addition to America’s alt right syndicate. Ostensibly, this group of arm chair philosophers attempt to lead listeners down a path of self-reflection and free-thought. However, there is something much more nefarious going on here. Listeners beware.

    Excellent
A great pickmeup of philosophical conversation to make the workweek less of a grind. more than that, discussions of political philosophy as opposed to “political science” are tough to come by these days, and these talks open a door to a lot of texts I would have blown past otherwise. Great job guys! I always get a laugh when David Bahr cracks a joke or Greg mutes his mic to take a bite out of a cheese wheel like it’s a large krispy kreme. Keeps things light.

    Worthwhile
An interesting selection of works are discussed. The banter and attempts at humor are less than what one should expect from a group of guys who make a podcast about Francis Bacon or William James. Folks on the right in contemporary America are either going to be the funniest or least funny people in the country. A right of center academic typically doesn’t have the easy freedom to try and crack jokes without worrying about consequences. This lack of practice at humor shows. Sorry guys. That being said their warmth and decency shine through and they have made my reading of some of the works deeper and richer than I had previously. I also appreciate them bringing on some grey eminences from academia to share their thoughts. When this goes well it goes very well indeed.

    Wonderful Political Philosophy
This podcast is an extremely well done intellectual discourse on political philosophy across the ages. Very engaging for all listeners. It is so kind of Alex and Greg to let David play with them. Also, being a quantum chemist myself, someone who studies the real truths of the cosmos, I find this show to also be adorable and endearing. Now in all seriousness, this show is a delight and well worth your time.
