Crying in My Car: A Podcast for Teachers

483

Crying in My Car is a weekly breath of fresh air to help teachers get through class without pulling their hair out or the hair of several students. No pedagogy here, just pure hilarity! Segments include Story Time, Teachers in the News, a weekly Top 5 and more endless comedy from comedians Devin Siebold and James Yon. Hear the perspective from both the educator side and the parent side of things while laughing uncontrollably until you cry... in your car (or not in your car, it doesn't really matter to us.)

Become a podcast that talks about teacher more than a podcast for teachers
I used to love the podcast but the tone has been shifting for several months unfortunately. I’m not sure if it’s because Devin has been out of the classroom for an increasingly long time-creating a disconnection-or just an attempt to appeal to a wider audience beyond just teacher but it doesn’t feel the same anymore. It feels more and more like a podcast that talks about teachers and less like a podcast that is for teachers.

The way you and James discuss the topics with relevance and humor really helps to lighten the load I’m an IST - Instructional Support Teacher at a charter school in Bethlehem PA I’ve often thought about quitting especially since I’ve been injured by students. The realest teacher laugh you’ll ever get
This show has gotten me through teaching and has helped me so much with being a new teachers. I’m five years in now and as I look back, this podcast has been there to be real and keep me laughing through all the hardship, fun, and learning I’ve had through teaching. His morals & jokes are so much fun and I’m thankful that he brightens our day with the truth. Thank you Devin! (You also have managed to find the best co-hosts)

One of the best podcasts ever
I love this podcast and all that Devin does to bring awareness to issues facing teachers on this podcast while still being fun and engaging. Since James has joined it has only gotten better, the chemistry between the two is phenomenal. I love the comedy and am always on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode to come out. Thanks for making me laugh and helping me get through the past few years of teaching.

    Love these guys
This is a great pod for teachers. I find James and devin are the Right combo of positivity and humor relating to American educational professionals. It’s a little dose of educational talk without things getting too heavy

    Not a teacher
I may not be a teacher and will never want to be one, but I love Devin’s comedy about being a teacher. I’ve been a fan of Devin since about 2017/2018 and I never get tired of his content. I also love that he has also introduced me to other teacher comedians like James. I love watching these two together. Hilarious! Great podcast!

I’m a senior in high school and I love the bored teachers podcasts. They totally help me understand teachers and their struggles and be more empathetic.

Love Devin, but cohosts are hit/miss
I’ve been following this podcast since the beginning and love Devin. I find him to still have relevant criticisms on education even though he’s been out of the field for some time. I do miss the old cohosts though. Mike was my favorite, but the Angry Texan wasn’t bad either. The new guy, James Yan (not sure about spelling) is not as funny and also keeps making jokes about being a teacher while his kids were virtual due to the pandemic. I get that school shutdowns were difficult for parents, but most teachers were working harder than ever before to make sure kids could access their education and every time James makes a joke about it, it grinds my gears. It’s honestly what inspired me to write this review. Read the room, James!

    Yikes.
I have never taken the time to review a podcast until now. It’s THAT bad. I tuned in because of the amazing title ready for some comic relief from my very teacher-tired life. Nope.

    Love Devin, co-host is ignorant
Devin is great, but I wish his co-host was a fellow teacher. I find that Greg has little to add, isn’t funny, and espouses ignorant beliefs (like that students are disrespectful because we don’t HIT them!!). I will keep listening for Devin but it’s to the point where I sometimes have to turn off the pod.

    Depressing
I have listened to Devon for about a year and slowly the show has gotten more and more depressing. The talk is constantly about how teachers are underpaid and undervalued. After an entire day of working with children I don’t want to listen to someone who reminds me that we are in a profession that is undervalued. The world around us is depressing and stressful enough. To make it worse, he makes no attempts to help the issues teachers face other than to talk about how he and other have left the profession. If I could give zero stars, I would.

    Saving My Day Daily
The struggle is real. Devin makes it funny. The title basically sums up teaching. The only other appropriate title would be Crying Under My Desk.

    Great podcast
Recovering former teacher here. Love the content! (Saw Devin do stand up last night—fantastic! Check that out too.)

    Educators everywhere need to listen!
My wife and I are both teachers in FL. The topics and opinions expressed in this podcast are so true. The humor is absolutely hilarious! It is so nice to listen to after a stressful day of teaching high schoolers (9-12, I have mixed classes) and just be able to LAUGH!!! Keep the episodes coming!

    Not the same without Mike
I listened for over a year now, and I think I need to tap out. The show is not what it once was (a tight 22-25 minutes), but now rambles quite a bit. Devon comes off petty and petulant, and while I do agree teachers are often neglected, disparaged and underpaid (I made a whopping 19,750 with a Master’s degree at one school), everyone is hurting right now with lots of real problems and no real good solutions. The show can be funny, but I feel more depressed then ever listening to him over the past two months, especially with the departure of Mike. He brought a balance and humor that worked well with Devon. Greg is fine (not trying to downplay his role), but this isn’t what the show once was. I do wish them well, and I know they speak to other teachers, but this one is tapping out. Your mileage may vary (isn’t that always the case?), but I can’t really bring myself to listen regularly anymore.

    Humor and honesty
My husband and I are both teachers, so I can really relate to everything you share. I appreciate listening to your insight and humor of all things that happen in and out of the classroom. I discovered this podcast a couple of months ago, and I’ve been listening to all the back episodes on my commute to and from work. I really enjoy it! Thank you for making me laugh in my car!!

    Ok
This show is kind of funny. Devin is a little too mean to his Mike for my taste, and he obviously hates teaching too much for me to connect with the guy. Teaching is hard, but the hatred he has for teaching is a real turn off.

    Too close to home
Only listen in the car if you want to swerve into oncoming traffic because the tears from laughter are clouding your vision, if being late is no problem because you miss your exit that you have taken daily for years because you are enjoying the listen, or you don’t mind strangers staring at you with odd looks from your howling laughter. If you’re a teacher and you don’t relate to this podcast, you should truly reconsider your life choices. I’ve enjoyed every episode!
  • artzc12
    Hilarious and 100% relatable!!
I can’t get enough of this podcast! Devin and Mike are hilarious and keep it real about the teaching profession. I’m a newer listener but binged all the episodes in about a week with my drive to and from work. I teach first and some days are ROUGH— this podcast definitely got me through when all I wanted to do was cry in my car 🙃
  • brickidickidck
    Great laughs
Funny and insightful. I love that it isn’t really motivational. We get so much “keep your chin up” type stuff that’s it’s great to hear the lighter side of an often stressful job.
