micheleshinesThe Sanitization of Historical Events is DisappointingI’ve just started the podcast and twice the host has covered the migration of her family into lands formerly held by indigenous tribes and the wording is so completely sanitized. It makes it very difficult to listen to the discussions knowing that the historical context is being scrubbed. Family history is a great tool for growth and reconciling events of the past but not if we talk about it in this incredibly insensitive way.

4four4Just one beef.So love this show and it has earned my 5 star rating. After reading the first page of the first book I knew I this book needed to be purchased well done. My only beef from listening to the podcast would be the sound. Nicole’s voice sounds great! Diane in my opinion needs an update. Whenever I listen echos of her voice ring in my head. Have you lovely ladies thought about investing in microphones? It would help the volume control and keep the listener concentrating on your content. Just my two cents. Thanks for all your great work and keep it up! Love this this!

LefteardudLove this showI absolutely love the content of this show. Been listening for at least a year. The genealogical research is done so carefully, and we’ll shared. I will say, I often listen to podcasts while I’m out and about (gym, commute), and I would maybe point out to hosts that the volume seems much much lower than other podcasts. Perhaps a tweak of the audio might be in order?

OsCookieResearch like a pro with DNAI enjoyed your course on DNA and listening to your inspiring podcasts. The challenge is to take all this wonderful information and apply it to my own research and reports.

JfcdOne of the best!Whether you are new to family history, or have been collecting ancestors for years, you will become a better researcher just by listening to the numerous topics of interest on this weekly podcast “Research Like A Pro.” Diana and Nicole are a great teaching team who break down the most complicated subjects into easy to understand pieces. Additionally, blog posts, research aids, and links to genealogical resources such as their newsletter can be found on their website Family Locket.

JuliePH13Kentucky medical school in 1800sResearch Like A Pro is my absolute favorite podcast, and I listen every week. I get all kinds of great ideas while listening to the show. While listening to this week’s episode, I was intrigued by Nicole’s thought about whether Jacob Cline had gone to Kentucky for medical school. Just in case it’s helpful, I do know that Transylvania University in Lexington has a medical school in the early 1800s. It eventually move to UK, but in researching my own 3x great grandfather who attended medical school there, I found that database record entries and a directory of students and faculty do still exist and are available online. Wouldn’t it be fun if you found him there? I look forward to joining your RLP study group of these days when time allows (after I retire, maybe). Julie LaGrange, GA

TurpinmSimply excellentI recently discovered RLP and am making my way through all of the prior episodes. Superb content. Diana and Nicole present a professional way of doing genealogy in an approachable and helpful manner, always from the point of encouragement.

Ruth - WorkhardPlayhardRLP Proving Your Pedigree with DNANicole and Diana's interview with Debra on Proving Your Pedigree with DNA was inspiring. The take aways from attending SLIG's DNA class to write your report as you research was inspiring. Recently, I had my uncle take a YDNA test to verify and extend my mother's paternal line and it showed we had a surname change. We do share atDNA with the 6 matches from the YDNA. This podcast was helpful in helping me take a few moments and start writing up my DNA findings in a report so I can share it with my extended family. I am very interested in the macro that they discussed and maybe future podcast on specifics of writing up DNA report when using the different kinds of DNA (atDNA, mtDNA and YDNA). DNA is a fansanating piece of evidence to include in proving your pedigree! I always tell myself and my family that DNA doesn't LIE! Thanks Nicole and Diana for sharing your knowledge and experiences on how to be better genealogists.

Over 36Very informative! The hosts are very good at discussing the topics which they tend to break down into small chunks of knowledge. Delightful to listen to this Mother/Daughter team. Excellent source for learning how to become a professional and what you need to do to prepare.

Kenneth D. DixonA Wealth of InformationI’ve enjoyed listening to Nicole and Diana share their knowledge on all things genealogy. While I consider myself an intermediate genealogist, I’ve already learned many new things - and hope to learn even more as I work on developing my abilities to that of a professional. Many thanks to you two!
-
DebtwonInformative PodcastDiana and Nicole’s podcast is one of the best genealogy podcasts available. I enjoy the range of topics from resources, to methodology, to DNA, to history. Thanks, ladies!!

Tpom713The genealogy podcast I’ve been looking forI’ve only recently started listening to this podcast. I wish I had found it earlier. It was exactly what I was looking for - the nitty-gritty details of how to do good genealogical research.

genzgenealogyLove the PodcastI have really enjoyed listening to this podcast. I am only a teenager but have been doing family history for a few years and have learned a ton. Diana and Nicole explain things really well, are wonderful and easy to listen to, and break things down but explain it in complete and whole picture way to. I have had a hard time writing about family history projects. I feel I am not the best writer but it is one of the steps. Today I got up the courage to finally try it. It totally worked. I was able to write. It was a little hard to start but once I got going it became easier. It also totally did the making sure I am not missing anything and everything fits together thing that they always talk about it doing. I had major doubts that I was going to find any conflicting evidence or possible holes or new clues but as I was writing I was able to see things that I hadn’t seen before. So Thank You and I wish you did more than one podcast a week because I am soon going to catch up and it is going to be a long time i between episodes for someone who lives listening to multiple per day at the moment.

avkearWhere are the first 35 podcasts?I love listening to your podcasts over and over again! I want to share some of your first podcasts about organizing with a friend and I can’t seem to find any podcasts earlier than episode 36. Please help!
-
Mandi1518Excellent resource!Nicole and Diana have become daily friends as I listen to this podcast so much. As a new genealogist, I want to make sure I’m doing things the right away and their RLP process just makes sense. I’ve learned so much from them already and look forward to beginning my RLP with DNA ecourse! Thank you, Nicole & Diana!!

The Genealogiet NersAmazing PodcastThis podcast helped me a lot with my brick walls and how to do the research where you don’t have random papers everywhere. Question, currently I am working on a merge on FamilySearch Family Tree and the other person has tons of people working on the ancestor but has no sources. Who do I talk to or what should I do? Thank You for this amazing podcast.
-
SanBeanCounterLove your podcast!I have been interested in family history since I was a teenager but have only been seriously researching for the past 10 years or so. My goal was to pursue accreditation or certification when I retired from my “real job” but now that I am only about eight months away from that date I have convinced myself I am now too old to start down that path ... until I found your podcast! I am thoroughly enjoying listening and absorbing all the great information and research tips you are providing and feel energized to keep on! Your book arrived in the mail yesterday and I can’t wait to dive in. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
-
Mookie.winmill3AMAZING LISTEN!!Very educational and fun to listen too.
-
StaynavytomStrangeI think it’s weird that a genealogy show about family relationships has a mother/daughter team who address each other by first names rather than by their family relationship.
-
BugnurdWorth your timeBy and far the best genealogy podcast out there. I’ve finally caught up on all the past episodes after discovering this a couple months ago. I like that they don’t have ads and sponsorships from big companies, just a quick plug for their book and e-course. I also appreciate that they take the time to edit the audio of each episode, so the conversation is concise and easy to listen to. They are incredibly knowledgeable and professional in their approach to research. It’s not a mystery why they are both successful professional genealogists. I look forward to the episode where you have to change the intro to “accredited genealogy professionals” (plural!). May I request a future show topic on newspaper research?
-
Sue in ArizonaLOVE THIS PODCAST!I learned about the podcast when Nicole spoke at our genealogy society meeting last year. It has since because my favorite podcast. I eagerly await each new episode. I was never interested in genealogy until shortly before my mom died in 2018. She had been researching our family since the early 1950’s when she paid someone in Georgia $2 to go to a cemetery and transcribe info off the gravestones. SO MUCH has changed, and Diana and Nicole are teaching me so much about how to take Mom’s research and go further. I recently bought their book and hope to take one of their classes soon.

familyfun22Consistent and ProfessionalCongratulations on 100 episodes! (Now 101) I love your podcast! I have listened to every one and some of them several times. I have been involved with genealogy for 30 years but realized I was only searching not researching. I love the RLP method and am so grateful for all that you do to teach others. I appreciate the consistency and professionalism of your podcast. It is by far my favorite podcast!
-
jjocarboneInformative and interestingThanks Diana and Nicole for your efforts at helping to raise the tide of all the genealogical research floating boats! Great job.

Abby's LinderAll podcastsLove all your podcasts! Diana and Nicole have helped this 1 year family researcher tremendously. I especially liked the one where Diana talks about her Alabama ancestor, since my Dad & his side of my family are from AL was very helpful and also episode 82 military records I learned a lot. I started a research log which has saved me time and helped me breakdown 2 brick walls. BTW I’m a RLAP binge listener. 10 stars!!! Thank you for all you both do, LInda

Stacy Ryan MangumLearn Something New With Each PodcastEvery episode gives me a new thought process, tip, resource, or idea. After listening to an episode with Alice Childs where she mentioned making “quick trees” I decided I would try that with a “challenging” ancestor. (My first thought was ‘How can you possibly make trees for people you don’t know?’) I did what I could to dig up information on two of my ancestor’s known associates and business partners. One I got nowhere. The other I learned he was just as “colorful” a character as my ancestor. But the real win came when I decided to make a quick tree for a man of the same name that I kept running across. My mouth dropped when I discovered these two men were first cousins once removed! And this other man’s son was a name I recognized from a newspaper clipping as posting bail for my ancestor. Now I know who this mystery person is, and have opened the door to potentially discover more about my ancestor.

Josiah de la MotteAmazing DNA tipsThis podcast is just loaded with great information, among other subjects, on how to use DNA results to find relatives. I'm 17 and have been doing genealogy for two or three years now. I especially love the careful explanations, informative for every level of experience. I used the idea of building a tree for matches to find my great-grandmother's mother (my great-grandmother was adopted) and I'm using it again for other matches, hopefully with the same success!

ReservayImproving my research skillsMy mother and I have been researching our family together for the last ten years, and as most folks do, we’ve hit our share of brick walls. I LOVE this Research Like A Pro process and pod cast. It’s really keeping us focused and moving forward with our quest to see what can be found and what else might be out there for resources we haven’t considered. Plus, I love listening to this mother/daughter team—reminds me of working with my mother every week! Thank you for your pod cast and your process—we are so grateful!

StacynljMy Favorite PodcastResearch Like a Pro with Diana Elder and Nicole Dyer is by far my favorite genealogy podcast. This mother and daughter team present methodologies and techniques for family research in a way that can be easily understood by beginner genealogists and relevant enough to hold the attention of seasoned researchers. The podcast is always fresh and contains information relevant to the modern tools available in todays electronic world. There are no commercial breaks, no loud music, and no requests for financial support. Diana speaks clearly and concisely, she doesn't panic or get overly excited about successes or failures. Listening to Diana has taught me to be more patient in my own family research. Nicole's voice is patient and giddy. I suspect she has a smile on her face most of the time. I just love these ladies. I recently completed the Research Like a Pro with DNA study group and it was a game changer for my family research. Stacy

nsmeltekopGreat resource for shoring up research skillsI attended an NGS conference last year and discovered that my research over the last 20 years was not up to any standards. When I got home, I wanted to find resources that would help me learn more about how to be a better researcher and this has been my absoluate favoritel Nicole and Diana make disciplined research and critial analysis feel approachable and I've found my skills have deleloped a lot just from this podcast. I also highly recommend their book and I look forward to taking some of their classes once I feel I can dedicate the time to it (working mom with a toddler!). Thanks for all you do Nicole and Diana!
-
Family WreathBrick Wall FallsI don’t normally write reviews or rate products but I have to express my thanks to Nicole and Diana for their excellent podcast. They are easy to listen to and understand. The podcasts on how to use all the features of FamilySearch helped me discover the parents of my husband’s ancestor. I had been searching for them for several years with no success. Wish me luck on finding the next generation—the parents of John Martin!

LGpriceWhat a Great Genealogy ResourceThese are great podcasts answering all the tough questions about how to organize and effectively research our genealogy. I can't say enough about these podcast lessons. I've bought the book and already see some improvement in my researching methods. Thanks to this Mother Daughter Team.

Sumack40So much wonderful information!I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this podcast but it is one of my favorites. Diana and Nicole present lots of information and give many options to help you in your genealogy research. I have gone back to the beginning episodes and have been listening to them as I read the book. I am new to researching genealogy and I feel this podcast will give me a great foundation for future research. I especially enjoy the ways they have used technology, or not, in their research methods.

fsbrownYou rock.If genealogy had rock stars, it’d be you ladies. Your podcast content is informative and helpful, even to a long-time researcher such as myself. I appreciate your expertise and enthusiasm. My dog thanks you as well... I think she knows our morning beach walk is not going to end until I can get through an entire episode or two. Please keep up your important work!

RebflysOne of the best podcasts everI have been fortunate to have been at Roots Tech and hear Diana Kept meaning to listen to the podcast right after Roots Tech but got busy. Now I am cramming your podcast because of all the excellent information I have heard. Will be re-listening to all of them at least twice. It has really made me realize that I need to change my research habits and set up a locality guide. I’m going to take your class as soon as it comes around again. The information that you give is so outstanding. Hopefully I’ll be able to break through a couple of brick walls, if not now I know that I can confidently hire a genealogist and it could spur me on to new and better findings. Thank you so much for the many invaluable tips. If you are new to genealogy research or have been researching for a while you will find this podcast informative beyond measure. Thanks again Diana and Nicole You guys are awesome

DigMyPast804One of Top 3Mother and daughter are perfect bouncing comments off each other and always a terrific topic. I listen to podcasts at night to fall asleep by, but this one is so entertaining and educational that I have to turn it off after two episodes or I would be up all night listening. Of my top three, cannot chose which is best: The Guys, The Mother-Daughter or The Extreme? Only comment for this show, whom ever does your META tags needs to add more search friendly terms as if you lookup genealogy podcasts “Research Like a Pro” does not come up!

ShauramA Gift from HeavenI never leave reviews for Podcasts. But I couldn’t help myself after listening to this mother daughter team! They are amazing! I discovered their podcast after an instructor at my local family history Library asked me if I like to listen to podcasts. She casually mentioned that she had started listening to “Research Like a Pro” and she thought I might enjoy it too! Enjoy it is an understatement! I’ve been devouring the podcast and all of their information on FamilyLocket.com I feel so blessed by their experience, expertise, and willingness to share it with the family history community throughout the world! Thank you for your professionalism and organization! You make it fun and manageable! I could keep gushing about how grateful I am, but I will stop here! A gigantic thank you!!! I will spread the word of your book, podcast and website to whomever will listen to me! 😀

TeacozyAn expert who can teach!Just being an expert in a field does not mean you can effectively teach it. Diana (a former teacher) and Nicole have both the genealogy expertise AND the skills to teach it, a rare combination. They organize and present the research process in a way that is easy to understand and implement. Thank you!

Someone in needBinge ListeningI stumbled across this podcast and am totally loving it. I have been researching for about 20 years and with every episode I am learning something new. I have purchased the book and enrolled in the e-course.

Judi TucsonA helpful seriesI'm an Evernote subscriber and try to keep syllabus notes on this site. After listening to the Evernote podcast and getting ready to litsten to the RLP 14 day research process, I downloaded the syllabus to Evernote and annotated it with my notes. Pretty perfect. Diana and Nicoles's framework is always so helpful and delivered in an " i can do this " format. Thanks

Lori's NanoOrganization episode #11 is fantastic!I just listened to this episode and found it SO helpful. I’ve been dabbling in genealogy for 25 years on and off. I have a wealth of information and documents, on ancestry, in family tree maker and a in folders, binders, and a box! I could not formulate a plan of organization. With a few notes and this podcast I know exactly what I need to do! Thank you!
-
Eliz-HReally useful podcastI started listening in January and am also listening to all episodes starting from #1. Just listened to Lucinda Keaton case study, which was great. Suggestion: share more case studies - so helpful to learn from!
-

Allen from AlabamaConfidence To Do This On My Own!I found Research Like a Pro while seaching for a podcast to help me better document my family history. Each episode builds upon the next but Nicole and Diana present each step in an order that makes perfent sense. I knew that collecting 'names and noses' was NOT something that I needed to pass down through the generations and since I am the only genealogist in my family, proper documentation for future generations is must. The Research Like a Pro FREE mini-course created the confidence for me to pursue a solid foundation of research for the generations that follow. My work schedule will not allow me to keep up a daily schedule so I purchased the book, the kindle edition and I have now signed up for the Research Like a Pro e-course knowing that I can do this on my own with confidence. Thank you, Nicole and Diana, for giving that confidence to me.
-
ShariGalGreat timingI really enjoy listening to the Research Like a Pro podcasts. Nicole and Diana present genealogy tips and information in a very accessible way. Perfect for all stages of genealogy learners! This particular episode about Genealogy Software couldn’t have come at a better time. My husband is purchasing me software as a birthday gift. This podcast gave me just the extra information I needed to make a decision. I will be continuing to listen and will recommend your podcast to others.
-
lucky lizHOW I WISH I KNEW ALL THIS YEARS AGO!I have been researching my family for close to 20 years and have made some wonderful discoveries, but looking back I realize the things I did not do, among other things––keep a comprehensive research log and write up my discoveries in a report. I thought I would never forget what I discovered and how I uncovered that information. Finding Nicole’s and Diana’s website, “Family Locket” has certainly been an eye-opener for me. The article’s they post open a “better way” of doing genealogy research. I love listening to their podcasts, and have heard several episode’s more than once. I have subscribed to the e-course and am slowly becoming better a the thing I love—family history.
-
ScarlettDMMGreat methodology podcastI love this show. It’s a great podcast for Genealogy methodology. So glad I found it.
