Faith Matters

1,122

Faith Matters offers an expansive view of the Restored Gospel, thoughtful exploration of big and sometimes thorny questions, and a platform that encourages deeper engagement with our faith and our world. We focus on the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) tradition, but believe we have much to learn from other traditions and fully embrace those of other beliefs.

Where is God’s Word in this?
After giving this an honest shot and listening to over a dozen episodes, I’ve decided this will only hinder and harm my faith in God. There is so much misinformation thrown around in this podcast. Absolutely no basis in God’s word. No scriptural references ever used. I have had my feelings hurt numerous times at a member of the church. But the foundation of this platform is built on hurt feelings and nothing more. Very shallow.

The Blessings of a Quirky Ward
I loved this episode and James Goldberg. His insights were really helpful in seeing our church wards in a more gentle light.

    Wonderful!
Listening to this podcast has changed the way I view my faith and has deepened my quest for insight into my relationship with Deity. I’ve loved every episode and have listened to many of them more than once. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all involved with this wonderful work.

    Expanding perspectives
I love the way hosts Tim and Aubrey Chavez are exploring the journey of growing in faith from a more universal, human perspective, including learning from other faith traditions. In The Church of Jesus Christ, we believe that God speaks to all people, yet we sometimes fail to seek out and learn from others. Don’t miss the episode with Mike Petrow.

    A counter culture of Love
David French discusses misinformation while spouting disinformation. Specifically claiming millions of angry Trump voters who are too stupid to understand truth. I don’t even like Trump but claiming there is no basis for misuse of the DOJ because there is SOME legal backing is false. Just because there is legal basis doesn’t mean there is equitable distribution of Justice. Hunter for example. Do pundits and government officials lie and exaggerate on both sides? Absolutely. Spouting disinformation and bias under the guise of “the truth” is maddening. Too bad he had no one with an opposing voice. In that case he wouldn’t have taken the interview:)

    Critical conversations
Thank you for your vital work pertinent to families today with tugs of differences. It is most important to speak the truth in love. Such valuable ideas to create intimate personal conversations of love and belonging in a family. Loving your family is all we are required to do. Not judging. Not letting fear enter in. God knows god loves. God saves. Let ho let God. He is mighty to save.

    Best podcast
I love this podcast. The views shared and explored are Christ centered and address difficult yet relevant topics. You can feel the love and respect those running it have for Christ and people as a whole.

    Inspiring and inspired
I truly look forward to this podcast every week- I learn so much from the conversations, appreciate the Christ-centered approach to navigating real questions about the doctrine and history of the church, and feel empowered to challenge more traditional narratives and find and hold to what feels true for me. Thank you for putting this out into world!

    Faith Matters really matters
This last episode interviewing Rich Hanks, son of Marion D Hanks is a microcosm of what Faith Matters means to me and how it has helped me through what some would call a crisis of faith. Tim and Aubrey do a phenomenal job of bringing uplifting content which often answers or helps in my understanding of my relationship with God, and the ancillary relationships we have with family, community, work and church. Thank you for your message of faith, hope and charity

    Anti LDS
I can no longer listen to this podcast, due to the frequency with which they have guests on who support teachings that contradict doctrine. Gender is an essential characteristic given to us by God- it cannot be changed. You cannot force or shame people into celebrating LGB- we have agency. And having politicians on who lie about our current president- who showed he was willing to sacrifice his life for the good of the citizens of America- not something I can ever support.

    Used to love…
Longtime listener here. This used to be the podcast that I came to for safety and constant uplift. It was a place where I felt less alone in my evolving faith journey. Some episodes still feel that way, but many do not. The series on the proclamation to the family is a good example of that dichotomy. It seems like there are extra institutional pressures to toe the line. If the partnership between institution and podcast no longer feels aligned, perhaps it makes more sense to look for independent support. I as a listener would be more willing to subscribe if I were sure that I could feel consistently uplifted by content being produced.

    Feeling frustrated
After listening to the latest episode on when Faith hurts or heals with Janeen Martin, I felt disappointed because there was no validation that the church does anything wrong and it came across like it is a “me” issue. I am wondering if this show is shifting away from institutional issues because of a fear of excommunication. The leaders of the church have punished Dr Julie Hanks for her honesty and her thoughts. I have to wonder if fear of church leader retaliation is spreading among other podcaster hosts and guests. You are all wonderful people doing wonderful things…don’t be afraid to call things like they are! We need to recognize the harmful parts and encourage change within the institution.

    Faith really does matter
Great podcast! I especially liked the recent episode with Professor Shima Baughman. It was fascinating and hopeful to hear about her experience trying to reform the criminal justice system and how faith communities are having an effect. Such an important conversation.

    Enlightening
I’ve very much enjoyed Faith Matters episodes. Faith promoting and enlightening.

    Brutifully done
I have been a faithful listener for a long time now. It’s so nice to listen to every episode and have so many things said resonate with my soul and the gospel I know and love. It’s also been eye opening, and more importantly heart opening to learn about issues I may not have thought about before or ways I can become more Christ-like in everything I do. I love that there are so many different perspectives shared. I also really appreciate it’s not only LDS people that are interviewed! I love finding things “virtuous, lovely, of good report and praiseworthy” in all things and from all different types of people!

    Doubter approved
My background: I am a questioner and a skeptic and often not even in a good head space about religion, because so much of what people get out of church does not help me feel closer to God. There is a big gap between what I am told to feel at church and what I actually feel. This podcast seems to transcend that gap. It gives light, hope, and faith without trying to shove darkness, fear, and doubt under the rug. It makes me want to be closer to God. It is my favorite podcast about religious topics. Thank you for producing this content.

    Thank you.
I have to say I was new to Faith Matters just a few short months ago. Through the interviews with Thomas McConkie, Richard Bushman, Tyler Johnson and so many others I have heard expressed what I have felt in my heart for so long. The deepest truths and purpose of the gospel have touched my soul and have given me more resolve to keep trying. Thank you for this treasure and know that I am grateful for all the time and preparation that goes into each interview.

    Our beautiful, messy unfolding story
The conversation with the editors of Saints ended in a surprisingly emotional way for me. As they addressed the humble and powerful faith of black saints waiting for the restoration of Priesthood power to them and their families, and the corollary state of thousands of family’s like mine with LGBTQ loved ones, I found myself flooded with tears and deep emotion. Thank you for a profoundly powerful episode.

I feel seen in the best way possible
I’ve never felt so seen, heard and understood as I did when listening to “when church gets hard” episode. So much gratitude to this podcast for what it teaches & for the hard feelings that it validates. Thank you!

    Arthur Brooks
This was a fantastic interview. Brooks masterfully explains the neuroscience in a way that is easy to understand, faith-filled way. It was beautiful, insightful and deeply impactful for me.

    Variety at its best!
I am so happy to have discovered Faith Matters! The high caliber of the podcasts and the topics is beyond amazing. Loved Eboo Patel, (I think when we all get together in the Kingdom we will find that God, by what ever name he has been given by men, will be the one true God.) Terrell Givens, Thomas McConkie as so many more. Addressing the spiritual and temporal challenges of our daily lives with a focus on the scriptures is so needed and you are providing a pathway to healing and peace for so many… Thank you so very much! Love
This podcast is so full of love and positivity. In a day where we are losing some of the things that are most important, Faith Matters helps us to remember what really matters.
  • Faith does indeed matter
    Women at church was overkill
I don’t usually care to leave a negative review. I know everyone is in different places and doing their best in that place. So many of the podcasts you release walk a line very carefully between principles of faithfulness and apostasy. This one seemed to actually step right over that precarious line. It was disappointing and as hard as I tried to feel the spirit while listening to it, it would not come. I love the idea of women in the church, of each of us understanding their own priesthood power and their sacred role as women. this felt more like whining and contention, and really lack of understanding of how God chooses to do things. Are there opportunities for change and how we do things? Most certainly! Is it hard to have faith in these times today? Definitely! But Faith is the first principal of the gospel and it would’ve been good to hear a bit about sitting in that faith and patience when we don’t quite understand the higher way of a perfect God

    Faith Matters!
The Faith Matters podcast and the Restore Conference are a welcome safe harbor from the turmoil of the world, and creates a safe space for addressing some of the big questions of faith, the LDS faith and church doctrine, practices and policy. FM invites contemplation about the important distinctions between cultural practices and the gospel of the Savior Jesus Christ. I’m invited to become closer to Jesus by participating in Restore, and the feelings of welcoming, love and acceptance of where and when you are in your faith is a creation that can only come from the spirit of the Lord.

The interview with Patrick Mason and his Rawanda experience is one of the best podcasts from any platform I have heard. Such great insight that he shared and so real. Thank you.

    So Faith Promoting
This podcast has helped me as I’ve worked through my own faith crisis and as I’ve witnessed others experience faith crisis. Every time I listen I feel inspired by the deeply thoughtful conversation and insights. This podcast has helped me so much with struggles I have with my faith and with church, I’m so grateful I found it when I did. I feel my faith is stronger and deeper than it has ever been, and this podcast has been a big part of that for sure.

I love every episode I listen to
I love this podcast so much! I love Tim & Aubrey as hosts- they are so real & vulnerable & willing to dig in deeper to subjects or questions that can be confusing. I dealt with a mental health crisis the last few years & a huge part of that was needing to mature in my spiritual understanding. I needed to evolve from a childlike perspective into a more complex perspective, willing to face topics that we might not have answers to. This has helped me better understand & love those who have a different lived experience than me. It has helped me learn that Heavenly Father & Heavenly Mother & Jesus Christ & the Holy Ghost love us unconditionally. That was strangely hard to accept & believe- & to learn how to love myself unconditionally. I had been scared of how messy growth was & so I resisted it, until I hit breaking point. And suddenly I had to grapple with these deep insecurities within me. Every episode I have listened to resonates so, so deeply with what I have learned the last few years on my mental, emotional & spiritual growth journey, which can be summed up in: faith & love over fear. Thank you Tim, Aubrey & every guest for your vulnerability & openness to have these important discussions. Tim- when you got emotional in Thomas McConkie’s interview, it resonated so much. Thank you both!

    Good Perspective
I’ve listened to this podcast for a couple of years. I’m slow to rate podcasts unless they consistently deliver good content and this one does. Some podcasters seem to like to hear themselves talk. Tim and Aubrey seem genuinely interested in learning from their guests and ask great questions. If you are looking to expand faith within the LDS tradition, this is a good way to do it. Good perspectives. Not always easy or comfortable answers.

    You saved my faith
Thoughtful. Academic. Intellectual. Practical. Life changing. This is exactly what I have needed to help me think through the issues and nuances with the church and my faith. Discussions at church rarely cover these topics, and I’m indebted to Tim and Aubrey for approaching them with care and fearlessness.

    Episode 211
I have only listened to one episode, but that one episode was so good that I am giving the whole podcast 5 Stars. I am sharing the Come as As You Are episode with Jen & Sam Norton with everyone. The message that they shared is 100% the message that we need our youth and the leaders of out youth to understand and embrace. I have worked with the youth for years, and I have a deep love for each of them. I want them to feel the love of our Savior and Father in Heaven the way Sam & Jen explain it so eloquently in this episode. Also already added Sam’s book to my Amazon cart.

    Great conversation with Valerie Hamaker
This is such a useful conversation about faith journeys. This needs to be discussed much more often than it is. Valerie has a unique perspective since she cares about families so deeply. We need to be hearing more from her since she has courage to speak truth to power!

    Helping families navigate faith journeys
Loved this episode with Valerie Hamaker, marriage and family therapist. Her work exemplifies her true desire to help bridge the gap of pain, misunderstanding, fear and disconnection within relationships experiencing different faith journeys. Appreciate the practical scenarios discussed as well as getting to the heart of beautiful, true theology: love, compassion and connection. Great questions posed by Aubrey and Tim and helpful answers with practical implementation by Valerie. So grateful for her work in this space! More of this, faith matters, please!

    Amazing Resource
I absolutely love this podcast! It has been an invaluable resource of knowledge and information that I haven’t found anywhere else. I love the variety of guests as well as the hosts Tim and Aubrey. I really appreciate that they ask profound and practical questions and share vulnerable parts of their lives. It has helped expand my mind and my faith.

    Great podcast!
I love the open conversations and views. Some of my favorites are on here. I just listened to the episode with Valerie Hamaker. There is a very quiet and soft division within the church and this episode is showing some real issues. Red flags that church leaders have warned against since the restoration. Another real reason we must try to have the Spirit with us. I try to keep an open mind and did listen to the entire episode with Valerie. It was tough. Some things I agree with but some I cannot stand with her on. I listen to those I disagree with. If they’re sincere, I come away from that interaction at least not hating them but more fully understanding where they’re coming from. Even though I may absolutely disagree. I will teach my children to walk in the light and truth and when they are older I will have shown them the way. It is then up to them to continue and with my guidance and counsel as they allow. I will absolutely not let my children try every whim and endless path that they come across. Especially with the confusion of today that continues to change and leave devastation in its wake. Having teenagers I understand it’s a fine line sometimes. But we have standards, guidance and the Spirit to help. We should love everyone no matter their choices. But we do not support wickedness. Love the sinner. Hate the sin. There is a clear difference that the world wants to blur the lines on. Again I agreed with a lot of what she said. But there are some real concerns
  • Maizy Mae
    Valerie's episode was 10/10
Loved the therapist Valerie's thoughts esp on parenting and the ideal to have loving and knowing your child be more important than any belief system. (Which is paradoxically a belief in itself- love over ideology).

    Ep. 224 is AMAZING!
Thank you for having Valerie Hamaker on your show. There were some honest, real, and tremendously helpful thoughts and practices discussed. I’m sharing this with my parents. I feel like she really cares and she really gets it. Gives me hope.

Used to be…My church… after church …but no longer
Update: I am so sad to say that I no longer find this podcast interesting. Did I change? Or did you? It feels like you have lost your courage to explore and dig deep in the places and ways you once did. I miss it. I started listening to Faith Matters at the beginning of the pandemic. It saved me then and continues to save me. I have found a home here, where all of my struggles, questions, and realities are validated and I have found a path of hope, joy and light in navigating it all. Thank you for your wonderful work.

    Growing and Learning
Every time I listen I am inspired and uplifted. Sometimes seeing and processing things a little differently then I was before. My faith journey has changed from one of fear and perfection, never thinking I could do or be enough to be loved by God. I am now filled with peace, joy and excitement. Trusting in Him and His beautiful plan for all of us. Thank you for the beautiful stories, thoughts, encouragement and inspiration.

    I love this podcast
Every time I listen to one of these podcasts I feel stretched and connected. I’m trying to gather information for my calling but really just want to understand others and their journey, so I can expand my own understanding and journey. Thank you for the topics, the guests, and the space for sharing and growing together. I feel all of it and it is so Christ focused and amazing to me. Thank you!

    The Amen Effect
This episode was absolutely beautiful. I LOVE the history of Jewish tradition explained and the insight and inspiration it brought to me. My adopted Grandfather always said, “you can pretend to care, but you can’t pretend to show up.” I strive to live by this and am trying to show my kids the beauty and importance of this idea. This episode is fantastic and I can’t wait to share.
