Libby’s great!Crucial listenAs an educator and education researcher I find Have You Heard indispensable for its timely and pertinent content. A favorite episode is the one with Celeste Lay discussing especially the political implications of charter schools and parents losing voice in schools.

EC Sp. Ed. momWorth hearingAs a parent, I’d recommend this to other parents, and everyone who claims to care about the quality of education and care our children are receiving. As a teacher, I wish my colleagues, admin, superintendent and school board would also give this show a listen.

DrDK2If You Care About Education, Listen to ThisWhile politics in education is not new, the widespread fracturing of our school communities by right wing extremists is. I so appreciate the thoughtful discussions on this podcast that remind us how important the gift of public education is, and how hard we have to fight to preserve it.

MegMoultonHolistic, quality information!Excellent, well thought out information and conversations. Thank you all!!

STsquigglesCould be more “nuanced”I really do appreciate this podcast and it does a good job of highlighting the conversations currently going on in public Ed…that said, I wish the hosts approached their topics from a more middle of the road stance. Many topics are introduced and then the various guests and as well the hosts proceed to blame everything right of center…to believe the hosts is to believe everyone on the Right is operating in bad faith. Everything seems to have become republicans believe this terrible thing, and conservatives have this bad policy, and privileged white parents are driving this horrible trend, etc…I just wish there was more nuance. I’m sure the hosts really do believe they are correct in these assertions…but so do many who operate in “bad faith.”

Diane Morrow, ELADelightful and informative podcast! This is a delightful podcast! On point. Not only do I enjoy listening to this, but as a retired teacher, I learn something from every episode about the educational landscape and the players in that landscape. This is also one of the rare podcasts I also support financially (on Patreon), and I do so because I see them as a sharp resource for helping communities understand some of the self-interested players in education—around such issues as school choice and accountability—and learn how to put democracy into practice locally to do what’s best for communities. Highly recommend.

RJJ ed researchWhat will be lost?Right now the rhetoric makes it seem as if there is no downside to parent choice. Beware of something that is too good to be true. Some will benefit. But it won’t be the majority. These smart women explain it all!

Pink caddie ladyI’m not an educatorBut I am a mom, a grandmother, and the granddaughter and mother of educators. I am involved in local politics in the birthplace of Moms for Liberty and served as the campaign manager for an awesome school board member who is fighting in defense of public schools every day. We’ve watched the culture wars take over our state politics and children are paying the price. This podcast does an excellent job of making hugely important issues relatable and understandable and I’ve asked all of our candidates (including at the state level) to listen. Highly recommend.

BicycleMediaIf you care about Public Education, they tie threads togetherBerkshire is by far one of my favorite education reporters. She contextualizes the trends we see. She shows the history, and the power players manipulating parents and policy. I appreciate these discussions remarkable breadth of knowledge. Every episode is well-researched. Some light hearted banter, but some real hard reporting. If you care about Public education as a common good. Give it a listen.

edwonkTXKkEssential ed policy education!I have been working in the education administration and advocacy space for several years now. I cannot believe how long it has taken me to discover this podcast! Relatable, relevant, easily accessed by a wide audience—this is now top-of-playlist listening.

As a policy maker, I look forward to each episode to make sure I’m up to snuff on the latest research. It also helps that Jennifer and Jack are so excited about each topic they dive into.

J_H_MarieThe best podcast on education out thereJennifer and Jack are the perfect combo of journalist and scholar. As a public school teacher and former academic, I find myself challenged and also “seen and heard” by their nuanced reporting and research. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a refreshing take on our complex and troubled educational system.

BgillzMy #1 RecommendationI’m a public school teacher working with immigrant students in Brooklyn, so this podcast is obviously right up my alley. However, I find myself recommending it to all kinds of people because it’s such a great exploration of cultural and political trends and shifts throughout American history. So I absolutely recommend it to you, whoever may be reading this review.

kacy fSmart and relevantThis is one of my favorite pods—so smart and relevant! I wouldn’t change a thing about it, although I sometimes wonder how amazing this podcast would be with TWO incredibly informed, interesting, interested, engaging and well prepared hosts…Keep up the good work, Jen!

OthemtsUnderstanding the Politics of Public EducationEducation and the politics of public education are big issues for me so it won’t surprise you that I’m recommending the podcast Have You Heard? Journalist Jennifer Berkshire (formerly EduShyster) and education historian Jack Schneider discuss the hot button topics of market based education solutions and the real world effects they have on students and communities. Episodes are short and released infrequently but pack a powerful punch. While waiting for the next episode, make sure to read Berkshire’s blog, also called Have You Heard? Berkshire and Schneider have also recently published a book called Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door which is worth reading if you're interested in more. (My only nitpick is that I really dislike the theme music).

smorgasBOREDWonderfully Thought-ProvokingThis show explores educational philosophy and policy with unrivaled depth and perspective. Every episode fully explores a topic and will get you thinking, perhaps challenging some of your most deeply-held beliefs about schools. It aligns perfectly with my political beliefs, but if you’re in the “education as a marketplace” ideology, this will not be your cup of tea.
-
amoelbaMust listen for parents and educatorsShocking and important. Education is under attack in ways we are not aware of - until Jennifer and Jack bring awareness. We need to wake up, organize and save public education.
-
Minzrule2020Love this showSmart and engaging. One of the best podcasts I’ve come across & I’m not even interested in education!
-
ntan10Context & Quality ContentThis is an excellent podcast. Jennifer and Jack do a fantastic job contextualizing the most prescient educational issues facing modern American education. I have recommended this podcast to friends, family, and colleagues, and not all are educators; however, all are impacted by the systems of education that this show digs into. Give it a listen!
-
CjdhshbzbxWide-ranging yet Specific!I’m always surprised by the wide range of issues and topics covered each week, yet the thoroughness of their research and understanding. They don’t simply regurgitate headlines or points you’d see elsewhere, they bring unique insights which I’m not otherwise exposed to. I’m not a big fan of the banter between Jack and Jennifer, but this podcast is so educational I have to keep listening!
-
Mimi1502Nuanced and accessible! As a education researcher, I am continuously impressed with how nuanced and accessible Jack and Jennifer’s explanations and interviews are.

PvranasHelping A Parent Make Sense Of It AllHave You Heard has been a tremendous resource for this curious parent who has a kindergartner entering Denver Public Schools next year. These podcasts have made a tremendous impact in my ability to get understand the current state of Education! Highly recommend for all parents. Thanks Jack and Jennifer!! (Notice Jack names first, because, you know, #Equity)
-
jasmine-RThe best Ed podcast out thereI always learn so much by listening to Jennifer Berkshire & Jack Schneider as they apply a skeptics guide to US education reform. They tackle serious topics with warmth and a sense of humor. One of my favorite moments was after they interviewed Michelle Rhee and then gave their interview a performance evaluation. Highly recommend!

Amanda_CoviFuture PhD studentHave You Heard is exactly the Education podcast I was looking for when I went searching over a year ago. It’s a great way to broaden my understanding of what research is currently being conducted in Ed and provides a look into different school systems across the state. I’m about to go for my PhD to conduct research of my own on teacher education and I have dreamt of challenging the traditional standards for academic research by presenting research through a more accessible platform such as a podcast. Listening to Jennifer and Jack has been truly inspiring. If I have one complaint it’s that my reading list is getting overwhelmingly long but I suppose that’s a good problem to have.

Sandy12973AMAZINGAs a teacher and someone who researches education, I LOVE this podcast. Both intellectual and fun, this podcast covers the right education issues.
-
Kiki RicksonEducational and Entertaining! As an educator, I am thrilled to have this podcast to help me understand educational policy and history. As a citizen, I urge every human to listen to every episode. This is a guide for why things are the way they are, and how we might be able to make them better!

Education phd studentGreat for scholars and the publicReally engaging with just the right amount of research vs opinion/anecdotes. Don’t know of anything else like it out there for people interested in improving education policy.
-
Bc3232So Thought-Provoking!This series is extremely diverse in its range of topics in education policy! All the episodes open your mind to something new, and they always have awesome guests that continue to bring fresh, expert perspectives.

KMcMurtreeCritical listeningQuick, information dense, and a pleasure to listen to. I always learn something. Great for political scientists, social scientists, historians, educators, and anyone interested in these fields.
-
ceolafLove itSmart. Entertaining. Banter, with love. Recognition of context and history. Wit. Informative. Fairly humble. Self-aware. Timely. Morally motivated. What's not to like? I wish I'd discovered it long ago. But now that I've binged, I am sorry that they can only produce so many of them a month.
-
Ajay SrikanthPhD StudentThis is great podcast which actually talks about issues in education in a sophisticated way, unlike much of the other reformy nonsense out there. Plus Jennifer is hilarious, and Jack Schneider has been a great addition! Keep up the good work!
-
empatheticsSmart, fun, and most importantly, neededI discovered the Have You Heard podcast this past year, and man, is it ever the best thing I regularly listen to about education (I put it even above Educate, APM's longstanding ed documentary podcast). I have an PhD in education myself, and I learn something new and useful every week. The hosts not only have deep knowledge of the American education system, they also have clear critiques of how it’s been alternately coopted and systematically dismantled by capital. Their eyes are open about what “reform” is about in this country. I hope going into this next season we hear more about what it means to fight back against the corporate agenda and actually move the needle with and for disinvested and marginalized communities.
-
Jon44cGreat podcast for educators or anyone interested in educationConsistently high-quality, engaging takes on the big issues in education. Charming, intelligent hosts and knowledgeable guests.
-
MethigdhI Need MoreI binge listened to all the episodes. I need more Have You Heard. Great podcast. Knowledgeable hosts. They always provide lots of historical context to modern debates. They try to understand opposing views and see through the eyes of others.
-
kmorganstraubTruth teller in a sea of alternative factsI rely on this podcast to cut through the enormity of propaganda BS out there, from corporate agendas to pro-authoritarian government to partisan politics to K-Street lobbyists. So grateful I managed to find it.
