Permission to Speak

122

Permission to Speak is a fun and fiery romp through how we talk and what our voice says about us with Samara Bay, speech coach to the stars and public speaking adviser back when there was a public to speak in. Each week she interviews people who specialize in how we use our voice and people in the public eye who are USING it—what it took to find their voice, when it still wavers, the crap comments they’ve gotten for being too loud or too soft or too millennial or too anything because PEOPLE HAVE OPINIONS, and how to give ourselves permission to speak like we belong in rooms of power just as we are. Let’s destabilize the patriarchy together! Let’s talk about deep AF societal dysfunction and how it plays out on our bodies and voices, but, like, have fun doing it! Hi. This is for you.

    Intelligent and interesting
Samara is an amazing person all around. Smart, capable and interesting presentation and episodes about a topic I have often wondered about. Love, love, love that she put this in a podcast format.

    Obsessed with this podcast
We don’t change the broken parts of the world, of which there are many, until the people who have the stories and ideas feel their voices matter and they have *permission* to use them. What Samara is doing is brilliant and everyone should be listening to learn and better remember that powerful words and important thoughts come from all kinds of people and places.

    Powerful Stuff
This podcast is amazing. It’s just packed with insights and useful information. Samara is a great host and so much fun to listen to. I am a language nerd and a performer so this content is apropos to my career, but there’s so much potential for everyone out there no matter your interests when it comes to reclaiming personal agency through your voice. Love it!

    Needed right now
Listening to Samara’s smooth and comforting voice is something we all need now. The mission of the show is so topical right now, each interview so in-depth, so interesting and educational. Some are more difficult to listen to than others due to the honesty each guest brings to each show, but it’s all quality and I look forward to the rest of the seasons podcasts. Thanks Samara as you are a Superstar in my book

    Love this podcast
Great interview with Evan. As a survivor I so appreciate everything she went through to speak out for those of us that don’t have that opportunity. I have followed her career and now as a person who loves her acting and singing I can also say I love her as an activist as well. Thank You Evan

Working the bravery muscle - our voice
Love this podcast for the technical and metaphorical tips on how we can use our voice literally and figuratively to express ourselves and realize our full potential. Inspiring women. Looking forward to more!!

    Permission Pending
Such a powerful and enjoyable listen. Already learned so much about voice. The title is so accurate too because as a black queer woman I often wait for my time to speak and I know to ask if I’ve truly given myself permission. Also, I have to consider what can I expect to actually be heard depending on how I speak or the delivery of my words. Will eagerly await the next episode and I hope to understand my voice better with this podcast.

    What we need right now!
Samara Bay is engaging, fun and knowledgeable. I know voice is big part of how I present myself to the world and I can’t wait to learn more from Samara and her guests about how to harness its power. I also love that they are giving me examples of other engaging and authentic voices to learn from. Cheers all around!

    Can’t wait to hear more!
This podcast is bringing a fresh perspective to the conversation around privilege and power, and even with heavy topics leaves you feeling uplifted. Can’t wait for more episodes!

    Disappointed
I had hoped for practical tips and techniques with perhaps some specific examples. After 38 minutes I thought we were finally getting to it, but alas, it was more of the same chatting without direction. I will revisit at some point to see how it evolves.

    Thoughtful and fun!
I’m hooked! Enjoying the interplay of both the physical and tangible voice with the metaphorical and purpose-driven voice. It also has helped me reflect on my own experiences with being told I speak too softly or need to speak up more in reviews at work, thank you!

    Feeling Inspired
Really enjoyed the first two episodes of this podcast. Samara's work is about shining light on the voice (both literal and metaphoric) and the role it plays it creating the self. She's touching on how women and those living outside of traditional power archetypes can redefine the sound of authority and be heard. Looking forward to more.

This trailer has me hooked! So excited to learn from and think along with Samara and her guests about what power sounds like in America in 2020, and how folks like women and outsiders can be heard in the moments that matter. Here's to raising more voices!
